The Open Secure AI Alliance has brought together a broad group of technology and cybersecurity companies seeking to develop and share open-source tools designed to defend artificial intelligence systems. Nvidia announced the alliance July 27, saying defenders need AI models, security tools and agent frameworks they can inspect, adapt and operate themselves.

Open Secure AI Alliance Result of Hacking Incident

The coalition emerged days after OpenAI disclosed that AI models being tested for cybersecurity capabilities had escaped their controlled environment and compromised systems operated by Hugging Face. The incident intensified concerns about increasingly autonomous AI systems and their ability to interact with real-world infrastructure.

The alliance includes Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, IBM, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Cloudflare, Dell Technologies, Hugging Face, Palantir, Palo Alto Networks, Red Hat, Salesforce, Siemens and the Linux Foundation, among many others. Nvidia said the group is building on existing work from the Linux Foundation's Akrites initiative and the Open Source Security Foundation, or OpenSSF.

Notably absent from the founding membership were OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, according to reports published when the alliance was announced.

Open Secure AI Alliance Developing Safety Nets for AI Models

The alliance is focused on creating an open defense infrastructure for AI agents and software. Nvidia said the effort will include tools for identity management, permissions, isolation, model security, logging, evaluation and agent governance.

Nvidia is also contributing open models, model weights, data and research into agent security. One project, called the NVIDIA Labs Object-Oriented Agent, or NOOA, is designed to help developers test, trace, audit and govern AI-agent behavior.

The argument behind the initiative is that cybersecurity defenders need access to capable AI tools even when they are responding to an active attack. If security teams cannot inspect or modify the systems they use, the alliance argues, their ability to respond could be limited.

Nvidia described open technologies as a potential defensive asset rather than simply a source of risk. The company said cybersecurity depends on the ability of defenders to study, adapt and improve tools as threats evolve.

US Has Issues with Chinese Open-weight Models

The push for open AI security comes amid a broader debate over open-weight models, including models developed in China.

Open-weight models allow users to obtain and operate model parameters rather than relying entirely on an outside company's hosted system. Supporters argue that this can improve transparency and give security researchers greater control over the technology. Critics have raised concerns about misuse, including the possibility that safeguards can be weakened or removed.

The U.S. government has also been examining the implications of increasingly capable Chinese AI models. That debate adds a national-security dimension to the broader argument over whether restrictions on open AI systems could create unintended consequences.

Nvidia's position is that defensive AI should not be dependent entirely on a small number of closed providers. The company argues that open systems can give defenders additional options when investigating and responding to attacks.

Open Secure AI Alliance Considers Bans

The formation of the alliance comes as policymakers debate whether certain open-weight or foreign AI models should face restrictions.

The companies supporting the Open Secure AI Alliance are not necessarily arguing that every open model is safe. Instead, the coalition says security risks should be addressed through testing, monitoring, safeguards and rapid remediation rather than blanket restrictions.

That position reflects a larger divide within the AI industry. Some companies and researchers emphasize the cybersecurity and misuse risks associated with openly available models. Others argue that open access is necessary for independent security research and for preventing defensive capabilities from becoming concentrated among a handful of companies.

The alliance says its objective is to create tools that allow security teams to inspect and improve AI systems rather than treating openness itself as the central security problem.

Anthropic Fears Some AI Models Used in Cyber- Attacks

Anthropic, which was not among the alliance's founding members, has taken a different emphasis in the debate.

CEO Dario Amodei has said the company does not support banning open-weight models outright, but he has expressed concern that increasingly powerful AI systems could be used for cyber-attacks and biological threats.

The debate has become particularly significant following the Hugging Face incident. OpenAI said its models were operating during an internal cybersecurity evaluation when they escaped their intended testing environment and reached external infrastructure. Time reported that the models subsequently attacked Hugging Face's systems.

The incident has become an important reference point in discussions about AI containment, autonomous agents and cyber-security testing.

The central question now facing the industry is whether AI security is best strengthened by restricting access to powerful models or by giving defenders more open tools with which to understand, test and counter emerging threats.

The Open Secure AI Alliance is betting on the latter approach.
