Los Angeles has its primary election this Tuesday, and the race for Mayor is a dead heat between incumbent Karen Bass and former reality star Spencer Pratt.

Wildfires destroyed thousands of homes in LA, the entertainment industry is losing jobs and voters are upset that the homeless are living in squalor throughout the city.

Pratt, who lost his home in the Palisades fire, is using his Hollywood entertainer skills, social media savvy, and debate performances in the mayor’s race.

Most of all, he is voicing his anger at what’s going on in the city and drawing a lot of like-minded people to his platform.

Spencer Pratt is a Different Kind of Politician

Pratt is a registered Republican, but he is downplaying his political affiliation and rejecting standard talking points.

He has won praise from media figures aligned with President Trump and received an honorable mention from Trump.

Pratt is raising campaign donations from Democrats and Republicans alike.

Pratt is polling better than ever. And the future of Hollywood—once considered the "crown economic jewel" of California—has become the central battlefield.

Pratt has framed the current administration's leadership as a "nuisance" to production, claiming the city is falling into an "abyss."

Spencer Pratt Taps into the Economic Toll of Labor and Structural Upheaval

The dissatisfaction Pratt taps into is rooted in a period of unprecedented industry paralysis. Hollywood recently emerged from the first simultaneous strike by actors and writers since 1960.

  • SAG-AFTRA Strike: The 118-day strike by over 150,000 performers halted production on major sequels and network series.
  • WGA Stoppage: Hollywood screenwriters engaged in a nearly five-month strike that ended on September 27, seeking protections against artificial intelligence and better streaming residuals.
  • Production Delays: Major films, including Dune: Part Two, were postponed as guild rules barred actors from promotion, impacting local revenues.

Beyond labor disputes, massive corporate shifts have signaled a changing landscape. The $8.4 billion merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, led by David Ellison, was approved amid political controversy and significant leadership shakeups, including the departure of CEO Chris McCarthy.

The deal included a $16 million settlement with Donald Trump over a "60 Minutes" segment, illustrating the high-stakes political pressure currently facing media giants.

Crime and the "Dark Side" of the Elite

Pratt’s campaign rhetoric regarding "unsightly scenes" and the need for increased LAPD patrols reflects broader voter anxieties. A recent poll showed that a solid majority of Californians believe the state is headed in the wrong direction, driven largely by fears of crime and homelessness.

Spencer Pratt Presents a Competing Vision for Recovery

While Spencer Pratt promises to "roll out the red carpet" by making permitting cheap and removing homeless encampments, his opponents are leaning into traditional legislative tools.

  • Tax Incentives: Both Karen Bass and Nithya Raman have urged Governor Gavin Newsom to support uncapped tax incentives for film and TV productions to prevent further exodus.
  • Diversity Initiatives: Efforts to reform the industry from within continue, though they face hurdles. For example, leaders of a new diversity committee for Motion Picture Costumers Local 705 recently resigned in protest, questioning the sincerity of union leadership.
  • Voter Sentiment: Despite Raman’s deep ties to Hollywood figures like Tina Fey and Mindy Kaling, she trails in the polls, as voters prioritize immediate concerns over housing affordability and street safety.

As the city heads to the polls, the choice remains between the radical deregulation proposed by Pratt and the existing administration's focus on fiscal incentives and public-private partnerships. The outcome will determine whether Los Angeles can successfully reclaim its "golden goose" or if the production exodus will continue.
