A weather warning is in effect. The likelyhood of a powerful El Niño weather pattern is raising alarms among meteorologists and climate experts who warn the phenomenon could fuel extreme heat, dangerous storms, and unusual weather patterns across the globe through 2026 and into 2027. 

Conditions are increasingly favorable for what many are informally calling a "Super El Niño," a particularly strong version of the climate cycle that can dramatically alter weather worldwide.

Recent data from the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirms that they expect a formation between June and August, with a 90 percent chance the phenomenon will persist until at least November.

Weather Warning of Onset of a Major Climate Driver

Andrea Celeste Saulo, the secretary general of the WMO, noted in a recent press conference that El Niño is a major driver of global weather.

 The warmer ocean temperatures add heat and moisture to the climate system, which serves to worsen climate extremes, including unprecedented heat waves and heavy rainfall. 

While scientists understand this phenomenon, the added layer of ongoing global warming means these extreme events require significantly more investment and preparation than in previous decades.

The El Niño Phenomenon

El Niño refers to a naturally occurring climate phenomenon caused by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator. Under normal conditions, trade winds blow west along the equator, pushing warm water toward Asia and Australia while allowing colder, nutrient-rich water to rise near South America. This process is known as upwelling.

During an El Niño event, these trade winds weaken. This allows warm water to drift eastward toward the Americas, disrupting typical atmospheric circulation. This shift forces the Pacific jet stream south of its neutral position, which typically intensifies storms and flooding across the American South while leaving northern regions hotter and drier.

Weather Warning Points to a "Super" Threshold

Adam Scaife, head of long-range prediction at the UK Met Office, has warned that the developing pattern could be of "record strength". Only a few such events have been recorded in modern history, notably in 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16.

Weather Warning of Record-Breaking Heat 

The last El Niño event, which concluded in early 2024, coincided with what became the hottest year ever recorded globally. Experts now fear that 2026 or 2027 could challenge those records again.
