DOJ Vows to Pursue Digital Fraudsters

“As alleged, the defendants preyed upon vulnerable individuals in the U.S. and abroad,” said Matthew R. Galeotti, head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “We are leading efforts to combat these complex and insidious digital asset investor scams.”

The case underscores the DOJ’s increasing aggression toward crypto-related fraud, especially those cloaked in multi-level marketing models and flashy digital promises.

The U.S. is represented by Jonathan L. Gottfried of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico, alongside Ariel S. Glasner and Tamara Livshiz of the DOJ Criminal Division. Defense counsel for Sims and Reynoso was not immediately available.
