Firefighters Battle Toxic Chemical Leak:Mass Evacuations in Orange County

Toxic Chemical Leak

California Firefighters continued an intense round-the-clock emergency response operation in Orange County after a dangerous toxic chemical leak at a manufacturing facility triggered evacuation orders. More than 50,000 residents were notified raising fears of a catastrophic explosion.

Officials said crews worked overnight Sunday into Monday to assess pressure levels inside a cracked storage tank containing thousands of gallons of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable industrial chemical capable of triggering what experts describe as a worst-case “BLEVE” event — a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion.

The crisis, centered at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, has now entered its fourth day, with firefighters, hazmat teams, engineers, and state emergency officials scrambling to prevent disaster.

Operation Focuses on Preventing Explosion at Toxic Chemical Leak Site

Officials with the Orange County Fire Authority said the overnight mission was designed to determine whether pressure inside the damaged tank had been successfully released or whether dangerous vapor buildup remained trapped inside.

Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief TJ McGovern warned Sunday night that the threat of a BLEVE explosion had not yet been eliminated.

“The BLEVE threat is the worst-case catastrophic event that we've been talking about,” McGovern said. “We are not there yet.”

According to fire officials, crews discovered a crack in the tank Saturday night. Initially, there was confusion about whether multiple cracks had formed. Authorities later clarified that there is one confirmed structural crack, while peeling weather stripping caused by continuous water streams created the appearance of additional damage.

Officials explained that firefighters have been cooling the tank continuously with hose streams in an effort to reduce internal temperatures and stabilize the volatile chemical inside.

What Is a BLEVE Explosion?

A BLEVE, or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion, occurs when a pressurized container holding flammable liquid overheats and ruptures violently.

The danger facing firefighters in Garden Grove is significant because methyl methacrylate generates heat as it destabilizes. If pressure inside the tank rises beyond containment limits, officials fear it could ignite nearby chemical or fuel tanks and create a chain reaction.

Experts said the tank currently holds an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of the substance.

Officials reported that the internal temperature of the tank had climbed above 100 degrees Fahrenheit — more than double the temperature considered stable for the chemical.

Firefighters Describe Toxic Chemical Leak as Highly Dangerous

Authorities stressed that emergency crews are operating in extraordinarily hazardous conditions.

OCFA Fire Captain Brian Yau said hazmat specialists and firefighters must move cautiously because of the risks posed by the chemical and the unstable tank.

“It’s very unsafe,” Yau said. “There’s a lot of risk involved.”

He explained that every decision being made at the scene involves careful coordination among chemical experts, engineers, and hazardous materials teams from multiple agencies.

Officials are also using drones to monitor tank temperatures remotely while minimizing firefighter exposure.

Massive Evacuations Continue Across Garden Grove

The leak has prompted sweeping evacuation orders affecting more than 50,000 people across portions of Garden Grove and neighboring communities.

Authorities released maps showing potential blast zones if the tank explodes.

According to officials, the innermost impact zone could experience catastrophic structural destruction, while surrounding areas could suffer moderate to minor damage. Additional regions could be affected by toxic vapors or flash fires.

Garden Grove Mayor Pro-Tem George S. Brietigam shared maps online illustrating the potential danger zones as authorities urged residents to comply with evacuation orders.

Emergency shelters remain open for displaced residents while air monitoring operations continue around the clock.

Governor Gavin Newsom Requests Federal Emergency Declaration

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he requested a federal Emergency Declaration from President Donald Trump in an effort to secure additional resources and funding for the crisis response.

The declaration would allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate federal support and provide financial assistance before a full-scale disaster occurs.

“California doesn't wait for disaster to unfold, we act early to protect lives and communities,” Newsom said in a statement.

Newsom added that more than 785 state personnel and first responders had already been deployed to assist Orange County authorities.

California Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff joined Orange County Rep. Derek Tran in urging federal officials to approve the request.

“The safety, security, and well-being of evacuated residents and the surrounding communities remain our absolute highest priority,” lawmakers said in a joint letter.

Investigators Examine Cause of Toxic Chemical Leak

As emergency crews work to contain the danger, investigators have begun examining what caused the tank to fail.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced that his office launched an investigation into the incident and encouraged whistleblowers connected to the facility to come forward.

Spitzer described the situation as “irresponsible” and “horrific.”

“If you want to come forward and tell us what you know, now is the time,” he said.

The investigation could examine maintenance records, safety inspections, equipment integrity, and compliance with hazardous materials regulations.

Meanwhile, evacuated residents have already filed legal action against GKN Aerospace. Law firms representing community members allege negligence and seek accountability for the evacuation, economic disruption, and potential health risks caused by the chemical leak.

GKN Aerospace Responds to Toxic Chemical Leak Crisis

In a statement released Sunday, GKN Aerospace said company personnel were working continuously alongside emergency responders.

“We are acutely aware of the uncertainty this incident is causing and sincerely apologize for the ongoing disruption to the local community,” the company said.

The aerospace manufacturer stated that its top priority remains resolving the incident safely so evacuated residents can return home as quickly as possible.

What Is Methyl Methacrylate?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency and hazardous materials experts, methyl methacrylate is a flammable industrial chemical commonly used in plastics, resins, coatings, and acrylic products.

Exposure to the chemical can irritate the lungs, eyes, and skin and may cause nausea, headaches, and dizziness.

Because the vapor is heavier than air, it can settle close to the ground and spread through low-lying areas.

Despite the danger, air quality officials said ongoing monitoring has not detected hazardous airborne concentrations outside the tank area.

Air Monitoring Continues Around the Clock

Officials from the South Coast Air Quality Management District said monitoring systems have so far shown normal air quality readings in surrounding communities.

The Environmental Protection Agency has deployed 24 stationary air-monitoring devices to detect possible chemical releases.

Specialized testing equipment reportedly has not detected measurable gas escaping from the tank itself.

Still, authorities continue urging evacuated residents not to return home until the area is declared safe.

Officials Search for Alternative Solutions to Toxic Chemical Leak

Incident Commander Craig Covey warned earlier in the crisis that authorities initially believed only two possible outcomes remained: either the tank would rupture and spill chemicals, or it would explode.

Now, officials say they are evaluating alternative strategies in hopes of preventing both scenarios.

“Letting this thing just fail and blow up is unacceptable to us,” Covey said.

Authorities confirmed they are consulting chemical and engineering experts from across the country for possible solutions.

The coming days may determine whether firefighters can stabilize the damaged tank or whether more aggressive intervention becomes necessary.

Anxiety of Toxic Chemical Leak Grows as Crisis Continues

Residents forced from their homes expressed growing frustration and concern as evacuation orders stretched into multiple days.

Some families remain uncertain when they will be allowed to return, while others worry about potential long-term health effects or property damage.

Officials continue emphasizing that evacuation orders remain necessary due to the unpredictability of the damaged tank and the potential for sudden escalation.

For now, California firefighters and hazardous materials teams remain at the center of one of the state’s most dangerous industrial emergency responses in recent years.
