A deadly confrontation involving the U.S. Secret Service unfolded outside the White House on Saturday evening after authorities say a 21-year-old Maryland man opened fire near a security checkpoint. The incident triggered a temporary lockdown at the White House while agents and local law enforcement secured the area and launched an investigation.

According to officials, the suspect, identified as Nasire Best of Maryland, approached a security checkpoint near 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue before allegedly pulling a handgun from a bag and firing toward officers. Secret Service agents returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. A male bystander was also struck during the exchange and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred while President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House, prompting immediate security protocols and heightened law enforcement activity around the executive mansion.

U. S. Social Security Details White House Shooting

The shooting took place around 6 p.m. Saturday in one of the nation’s most heavily secured areas. According to the U.S. Secret Service official website, officers assigned to White House protection responded within seconds after the suspect allegedly began shooting.

The Metropolitan Police Department and federal investigators quickly converged on the scene. Emergency responders transported the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities confirmed that no Secret Service personnel were injured during the gunfire exchange. Investigators are still determining whether the wounded bystander was struck by bullets fired by the suspect or by returning gunfire from officers.

Several members of the White House press pool reportedly captured video of Secret Service agents rushing across the White House lawn moments after the shooting began.

U.S. Secret Service Locks Down White House

Following the gunfire, security officials placed the White House under temporary lockdown while officers swept the surrounding area for additional threats.

The White House complex has long maintained some of the most advanced security measures in the world, including heavily armed tactical teams, reinforced fencing, surveillance systems, and restricted access points.

Officials later lifted the lockdown after determining there was no continuing threat.

The shooting remains under investigation by federal and local authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Secret Service.

Past Attacks on the Secret Service at the White House

Saturday’s shooting joins a long history of security incidents involving the White House and presidential protection details.

2011 White House Shooting

Another major incident occurred in 2011 when a gunman fired multiple rounds at the White House from Constitution Avenue. Several bullets struck the residence, including a window in the residential quarters. President Barack Obama and his family were not home at the time.

The case led to renewed scrutiny of White House perimeter security and response procedures.

U.S. Secret Service Heightens Concerns of Presidential Security

The latest shooting is expected to renew debate over security around federal buildings and high-profile government officials. The Secret Service has faced increasing challenges in recent years involving drones, armed individuals, fence breaches, and politically motivated threats.

Security experts note that areas surrounding the White House remain difficult to secure completely because of the heavy pedestrian and tourist traffic in downtown Washington.

Federal authorities have not yet released a possible motive for Saturday’s shooting.
