A deadly confrontation involving the U.S. Secret Service unfolded outside the White House on Saturday evening after authorities say a 21-year-old Maryland man opened fire near a security checkpoint. The incident triggered a temporary lockdown at the White House while agents and local law enforcement secured the area and launched an investigation.

According to officials, the suspect, identified as Nasire Best of Maryland, approached a security checkpoint near 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue before allegedly pulling a handgun from a bag and firing toward officers. Secret Service agents returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. A male bystander was also struck during the exchange and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred while President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House, prompting immediate security protocols and heightened law enforcement activity around the executive mansion.

The shooting took place around 6 p.m. Saturday in one of the nation’s most heavily secured areas. According to the U.S. Secret Service official website, officers assigned to White House protection responded within seconds after the suspect allegedly began shooting.

The Metropolitan Police Department and federal investigators quickly converged on the scene. Emergency responders transported the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
