Forgotten 1940s Book Reignites Debate Over First UFO Narrative as Flying Saucers Capture America’s Imagination

The modern UFO phenomenon is often traced to dramatic 1947 sightings, but a deeper look into media history reveals a surprising contender for the earliest “flying saucer book” ever pushed into the public spotlight. At the center of it all is a forgotten work by R. DeWitt Miller and a radio-driven media storm that helped shape how America first understood mysterious objects in the sky.

RADIO POWER AND THE BIRTH OF A UFO MEDIA MOMENT

In the 1940s, radio was not just reporting news, it was creating it. Influential commentators like Walter Winchell and Frank Edwards shaped public perception with dramatic storytelling that reached millions.

Winchell’s syndicated column captured that influence when, in a July 7, 1947 San Jose News story, he declared:
"The mystery of the ‘Flying Saucers’ is not new."

He pointed directly to a book that had already been circulating in relative obscurity, Forgotten Mysteries by R. DeWitt Miller.

The timing mattered. America was already gripped by early UFO reports, and the idea that someone had “predicted” or documented them earlier instantly gained traction.

A FORGOTTEN BOOK SUDDENLY IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The ripple effect was immediate. Even famed pilot Kenneth Arnold, whose 1947 sighting helped launch the “flying saucer” era, referenced Miller’s book during early lectures that same July.

Miller, a writer focused on unexplained phenomena, suddenly found himself labeled a UFO authority almost overnight.

In his 1955 work You Do Take It with You: An Adventure into the Vaster Reality, Miller later reflected on his unexpected entry into the saucer debate.

FROM CORONET ARTICLES TO COSMIC SPECULATION

Forgotten Mysteries was largely a compilation of articles originally published in Coronet magazine. A 1947 review by Geoffrey Giles in Fantasy Review described Miller’s approach as:

"fantastic facts... presenting them in mystifying array, much as Mr. Fort used to do. He is, in fact, a Fortean, and has been dogging the Great Doubter's footsteps for 15 years or more, accumulating a mass of pallid data on such things as the Devil's Footprints, death fogs, sea serpents and missing ships"

The book’s most provocative section, Enigmas Out of Space, turned directly toward aerial mysteries and unexplained objects in the sky.

Miller even entertained radical possibilities for the era, writing:

"That conscious beings from other worlds have actually reached this earth and navigated our skies in space ships."

That single idea placed him, briefly, at the center of the growing UFO conversation.

CHARLES FORT’S SHADOW OVER THE UFO ORIGIN STORY

Behind Miller’s sudden fame stood a much earlier thinker, Charles Fort, whose work on strange aerial phenomena and unexplained events laid the groundwork for later interpretations of UFOs as extraterrestrial craft.

Fort’s influence extended through writers like Vincent Gaddis, Ray Palmer, and Meade Layne, helping shape early paranormal and UFO literature.

Fort died in 1932, but his ideas lived on through the Fortean Society, led by Tiffany Thayer, who continued publishing Doubt magazine and promoting anomalous reports.

Even the rediscovery of Fort’s work became a media story of its own, with reporters treating The Book of the Damned as a “new discovery” decades after its publication.

FROM DISCOVERY TO PUBLICITY MACHINE

The attention surrounding Miller created a brief but intense media cycle. As Loren Gross later described in UFOs: A History Vol. 1: 1947, journalists and broadcasters quickly elevated Miller into a public “flying saucer expert,” even though his work was rooted in earlier Fortean ideas rather than new investigation.

But the spotlight did not last long. Once reporters traced Miller’s influence back to Fort, the narrative shifted again, revealing a much older intellectual lineage behind UFO speculation.

WINCHELL’S ROLE IN AMPLIFYING THE MYSTERY

Winchell himself reinforced the connection in his widely read column, writing:

"WALTER WINCHELL says: 'The mystery of the flying saucers is not new, In Forgotten Mysteries R. Dewitt Miller offers two cases which perhaps will clear up the mystery.'"

That endorsement helped push Miller’s book into mainstream discussion at the height of early UFO hysteria.

RADIO SPECIALS AND EARLY INVESTIGATIONS

One of the earliest dedicated UFO broadcasts aired July 10, 1947, on ABC radio. The 15-minute special, The Search for the Flying Saucers, hosted by Walter Kiernon, featured witnesses and commentators, including Miller.

Miller’s position was measured. He accepted some pilot reports, including those tied to Kenneth Arnold, as genuine, but warned that many later sightings were likely hoaxes.

He suggested several explanations, including experimental military aircraft, but also left open a more controversial possibility: that some objects might not be earthly at all.

He reportedly stated that the discs could be “from Mars or somewhere else in outer space.”

CHILE-SUITED PILOTS, AIR FORCE INTEREST, AND RISING QUESTIONS

By 1948, sightings such as the Chiles-Whitted encounter intensified speculation. Once again, Miller was pulled into media discussions as a presumed authority on mysterious aerial phenomena.

In a July 26, 1948 Knoxville Journal article, he was described as an authority on psychic phenomena and unexplained events, offering multiple theories to explain UFO sightings.

THE FIRST UFO BOOK CONTROVERSY

Later writers, including Major Donald Keyhoe, would build more structured UFO narratives in works like The Flying Saucers Are Real (1950), but Miller’s earlier book had already been thrust into the conversation by media amplification.

This led to a retrospective claim that Forgotten Mysteries functioned as the first UFO book, at least in terms of public promotion and cultural impact.

The argument was reinforced by Winchell’s framing that the mystery had already been documented:

"WALTER WINCHELL says: 'The mystery of the flying saucers is not new, In Forgotten Mysteries R. Dewitt Miller offers two cases which perhaps will clear up the mystery.'"

EPILOGUE: BLUE BOOK AND LINGERING FOOTPRINTS

Decades later, the Air Force’s Project Blue Book files contained little substantial material on Miller’s book, though his name and work were occasionally referenced.

Interestingly, Miller himself reported a UFO-related experience on February 1, 1954, in Puente, California, described as an “Angel Hair-type case” that included photographic evidence.

The files contained more extensive references to Charles Fort’s writings than to Miller’s work, underscoring once again how deeply Fort’s ideas shaped early UFO interpretation.

Miller’s Forgotten Mysteries, also published under the title Impossible Yet It Happened!, remains a key artifact in the cultural history of UFO belief, marking the moment when old anomalous folklore collided with modern media sensationalism and the age of flying saucers was born.
