Sun’s husband, Chris Hu, was also arrested at their Long Island home on charges of money laundering, bank fraud, and misuse of identification. According to the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon Peace, Sun and Hu received millions of dollars in kickbacks for their efforts and laundered the proceeds through various transactions. The couple allegedly used the illicit funds to purchase a $4.1 million Long Island residence and a $2.1 million condominium in Hawaii.

Impact and Legal Proceedings

Gov. Kathy Hochul is not accused of any wrongdoing in connection with the case. The indictment claims that Sun “actively concealed” her activities from the state government, which violated both state and federal laws. Sun and Hu are expected to make their initial court appearances in Brooklyn federal court later Tuesday.

This case highlights the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts to crack down on foreign influence operations within the country. The charges against Sun and Hu reflect broader concerns about the CCP’s efforts to exert influence in American political and governmental institutions through covert operations.
