On Friday, David Jolly, a former Republican lawmaker, slammed the GOP, according to The Hill.

An Overview of Jolly's Statements

Jolly shared his thoughts about the Republican Party during his segment on 'Real Time with Bill Maher.' The former GOP representative began by stating that Republicans lack politically independent allies:

"The important part here about the enthusiasm spike among Republicans is that it is among Republicans. It is not among Independents."

Shortly thereafter, Jolly stated that "there is no moderate wing" amongst Republicans:

"Republicans are now more excited but among the Independents, you know what they learned today? There is no moderate wing of the Republican Party. That was the message they learned today."

The former GOP lawmaker then began to call out various members of the Republican Party:

"Susan Collins is a not a moderate. Bob Corker is not a maverick and Jeff Flake is not going to be the next president of the United States. There is no moderate wing of the Republican Party so Republicans might be more excited over Kavanaugh."

Politics and Extremism

Over the past year, both Republicans and Democrats alike have faced accusations of extremism. Many Americans believe that both major political parties are moving either further to the right or further to the left. Furthermore, these are actions which various individuals believe will hurt both parties during the upcoming midterm elections. Republicans and Democrats have subsequently faced advice to work on appealing to moderates, Independents, and other nontraditional voters.

Many conservatives believe that the left wing is lacking a moderate sector. Confrontational protests, calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and more have served as reasons behind the aforementioned perceptions.

Despite David Jolly's former ties to conservatism, he is a staunch critic of President Trump. Moreover, Jolly has championed for Democrats and urged Americans to "flip the House [of Representatives]" by voting against Republican candidates in November.
