From Scoresby Sund to the Balearics: Europe Braces for Its First Total Solar Eclipse Since 1999

August 12 total solar eclipse

When was the last time the moon's shadow fell across Europe? Not since 1999. On August 12, it happens again — and this time, the world is watching from ships, fjords and rooftops stretching from the Arctic to the Mediterranean.

A Narrow Path, A Rare Sight

The total solar eclipse of 2026 will trace a narrow corridor across the North Atlantic, passing directly over Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, a corner of Portugal and the Balearic Islands. Along that path — and only along that path — day will briefly collapse into twilight as the moon fully covers the sun, unveiling the corona, the sun's faint and elusive outer atmosphere that is normally invisible against its glare.

Outside that narrow band, the show doesn't stop entirely. Millions of skywatchers across much of Europe, along with parts of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, will witness a partial eclipse — the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun rather than swallowing it whole.

Chasing Totality From the Fjords of Greenland

USA Herald is following the eclipse from two vantage points directly on the path of totality.

Skywatching editor Daisy Dobrijevic is currently aboard HX Expeditions' MS Spitsbergen, navigating Greenland's rugged coastline toward Scoresby Sund — the world's largest and longest fjord system — where she'll attempt to witness totality firsthand.

It's a second chance she's hoping pays off differently this time. During the last major eclipse she covered, totality turned into what she has since described as a total bust — though, notably, not for the reason most skywatchers would assume. Whether the Arctic skies over Scoresby Sund cooperate this time remains to be seen.

A second team will report from Spain, tracking the eclipse as it crosses into the Balearic Islands before the moon's shadow finally slips off the European continent.

How to Watch — Wherever You Are

For those lucky enough to be standing inside the path of totality, the advice is simple: get outside, and don't forget a proper pair of eclipse glasses — the difference between witnessing one of nature's rarest spectacles and damaging your eyesight comes down to that one piece of gear.

For everyone else — those outside the path, or those facing the very real possibility of cloud cover ruining the view — the eclipse won't be out of reach. A wide range of live broadcasts will carry the event online, many featuring astronomers and eclipse scientists breaking down what viewers are seeing in real time and why it matters.

A Moment Two Decades in the Making

Total solar eclipses are, by nature, exercises in extreme geographic luck — you either happen to be standing in a strip of land a few dozen miles wide at exactly the right moment, or you don't. Europe hasn't had that luck since 1999. It won't again for years after this one passes.

For the scientists studying the corona, the skywatchers chasing the shadow across the Atlantic, and the millions simply looking up from their own backyards, August 12 offers a single, brief window — measured in minutes, in some places seconds — before the sun returns and the sky, along with the wait for the next eclipse, begins again.
