Garden Grove Evacuation

The massive Garden Grove Evacuation continued into a fourth day Monday as more than 50,000 residents in Orange County remained under mandatory evacuation orders amid fears that a leaking chemical tank at an aerospace facility could explode or release dangerous toxic vapors. Emergency crews worked through the night attempting to stabilize a damaged storage tank containing thousands of gallons of methyl methacrylate, a volatile industrial chemical capable of triggering a catastrophic blast.

Officials with the Orange County Fire Authority said firefighters and hazardous materials experts conducted overnight operations to determine whether dangerous pressure was building inside the tank or whether the system had begun releasing pressure safely through a crack discovered over the weekend.

The emergency response has become one of the largest hazardous materials incidents in recent Orange County history, involving hundreds of firefighters, state emergency personnel, air quality specialists, federal agencies, and law enforcement investigators.

Crews Race to Begin Garden Grove Evacuations

Authorities said the central concern remains the possibility of a BLEVE — a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion — involving the damaged tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove.

Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief TJ McGovern said firefighters were still trying to determine whether pressure inside the tank had stabilized.

“The BLEVE threat is the worst-case catastrophic event that we've been talking about,” McGovern said during an operational briefing. “The worst-case scenario is still possible.”

Emergency crews discovered a crack in the tank Saturday night, raising new questions about whether pressure was escaping naturally or whether vapor buildup was creating structural instability that could eventually lead to a rupture.

Initially, reports suggested multiple cracks had formed. However, the Orange County Fire Authority later clarified that there is only one confirmed crack. Officials explained that peeling weather stripping caused by continuous hose streams created confusion about additional structural damage.

OCFA Public Information Officer Wayhowe Huang said water being sprayed on the tank around the clock caused exterior material to peel away, making it appear as though multiple cracks existed.

Dangerous Chemical Crisis Causes Garden Grove Evacuations

Officials estimate the damaged tank contains between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical used in plastics, coatings, and industrial manufacturing.

Fire officials reported that the internal temperature inside the tank climbed above 100 degrees Fahrenheit — far beyond what responders described as the chemical’s “happy place” or stable operating temperature.

Incident Commander Craig Covey said temperatures had been increasing by approximately one degree every hour, alarming hazardous materials experts monitoring the situation.

Authorities warned that the actual temperature inside the tank could be even higher because the tank gauge maxes out at 100 degrees.

Experts fear the chemical’s self-heating properties could trigger what is known as a “thermal runaway” event, where rising temperatures rapidly accelerate chemical reactions and increase pressure inside the container.

What Is Methyl Methacrylate?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, methyl methacrylate is a flammable liquid commonly used in acrylic plastics, resins, adhesives, and industrial coatings.

Health experts said exposure can irritate the lungs, eyes, and skin while also causing dizziness, nausea, headaches, and respiratory distress.

The chemical is particularly dangerous because its vapor is heavier than air, allowing it to settle near the ground and spread through low-lying areas.

Orange County Health Officer Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong said residents outside evacuation zones are not expected to face serious health risks, even if they notice the chemical’s strong fruity odor.

“If you are not in the evacuation zone, we don't expect any health impact,” she said. “If you were told to evacuate, please evacuate.”

Massive Garden Grove Evacuation Zone Remains in Effect

Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place across large sections of Garden Grove and neighboring communities.

Officials expanded evacuation boundaries as the situation evolved:

  • Western border: Valley View Street
  • Northern border: Ball Road
  • Southern border: Trask Avenue
  • Eastern border: Dale Street

Authorities have not provided a timeline for when residents may safely return home.

Maps released by OCFA Division Chief Nick Freeman showed a potential blast radius if the tank explodes. According to officials, the innermost zone could experience catastrophic structural damage, while surrounding rings could suffer moderate or limited damage from shockwaves, flash fires, or toxic vapors.

The large red-shaded area on the map represents the mandatory evacuation zone, while yellow areas indicate locations where odors may be detectable but not necessarily harmful.

Hundreds of Emergency Personnel Deployed

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that more than 785 state personnel and emergency responders had been deployed to assist local authorities and hazardous materials specialists.

Newsom also requested that President Donald Trump approve a federal Emergency Declaration to unlock additional resources through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The request differs from a traditional Major Disaster Declaration because it is designed as a preemptive measure before widespread destruction occurs.

“California doesn't wait for disaster to unfold, we act early to protect lives and communities,” Newsom said.

California Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff joined Orange County Rep. Derek Tran in urging federal officials to approve the declaration.

“The severity of this disaster requires additional coordination and federal support,” lawmakers wrote in a joint letter.

“Very Unsafe” Conditions During Garden Grove Evacuation

Firefighters working the scene described the operation as highly dangerous and methodical.

OCFA Fire Captain Brian Yau said crews are carefully coordinating every move because of the enormous risks involved.

“It’s very unsafe,” Yau said. “There’s a lot of risk involved.”

Officials said firefighters, hazmat teams, engineers, and chemical experts are relying on drone technology and remote monitoring equipment to reduce direct exposure to the unstable tank.

Authorities also confirmed that experts from across the country are advising Orange County officials on potential solutions.

Covey previously warned that the crisis could end in one of two catastrophic ways: either the tank ruptures and spills thousands of gallons of chemicals, or it explodes.

“Letting this thing just fail and blow up is unacceptable to us,” Covey said.

Air Quality Monitoring Shows Normal Levels

Despite the ongoing danger, officials said air quality tests around surrounding communities continue showing normal readings.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District reported that extensive monitoring operations have not detected hazardous airborne chemical levels.

The Environmental Protection Agency deployed 24 stationary air monitors operating around the clock to detect leaks or dangerous vapors.

Officials also said specialized detection equipment has not identified gas escaping from the damaged tank.

Still, authorities stressed that conditions could change rapidly if the tank deteriorates further.

Lawsuits Begin: Criminal Investigation into Garden Grove Evacuations

As the emergency response continues, accountability efforts are accelerating.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced an investigation into the cause of the tank failure and urged whistleblowers connected to GKN Aerospace to come forward.

“If you want to come forward and tell us what you know, now is the time,” Spitzer said.

Officials asked anyone with information regarding maintenance, operations, or safety concerns at the facility to contact investigators through a county hotline or anonymous reporting portal.

Spitzer described the situation as “irresponsible” and “horrific.”

Meanwhile, class-action lawsuits have already been filed against GKN Aerospace by evacuated residents seeking accountability for disruptions, property concerns, and possible health risks.

Garden Grove Evacuation: Shelters and Community Services Open

Multiple evacuation centers remain open across Orange County for displaced residents.

Emergency shelters include:

  • Garden Grove Sports & Recreation Center
  • Savanna High School in Anaheim
  • Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley
  • Los Alamitos High School
  • Orange County Fair & Event Center for RV evacuees

Most locations are accepting pets.

The nonprofit organization World Central Kitchen arrived in Garden Grove to provide meals and support services for evacuees and first responders.

Officials also established public assistance resources:

  • Garden Grove 24-hour call center: (714) 741-5444
  • Orange County information hotline: (714) 628-7085
  • California Disaster Distress Helpline: 1-800-985-5990

Uber announced free transportation for evacuees traveling to shelters. Residents can use the promo code “OCSAFE26” for rides worth up to $40.

Schools, Events and Public Activities Disrupted

The emergency has disrupted schools, public events, and community activities throughout the region.

The Garden Grove Unified School District closed 15 campuses indefinitely while monitoring the situation. Additional schools in Anaheim, Westminster, Cypress, Magnolia, and Savanna districts were also closed.

City officials confirmed that the annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival would continue in limited form, though the parade and 5K run were canceled.

Meanwhile, Cypress officials canceled a Memorial Day event at Forest Lawn Memorial Park because of safety concerns.

Disneyland Resort stated that park operations remain unaffected by the incident.

Cause of Leak Remains Unknown as Garden Grove Evacuation Continues

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the tank to crack or why the chemical leak began.

Officials continue examining maintenance records, engineering systems, operating procedures, and safety protocols at the aerospace facility.

For now, firefighters and hazardous materials experts remain focused on preventing the worst-case scenario.

The coming days will likely determine whether emergency crews can stabilize the tank safely or whether the situation escalates into a larger industrial disaster affecting communities across Orange County.
