Gen Z Leaning Towards Freelance Work Over Traditional 9-to-5s

Upwork’s UpNext 2024 initiative shows that younger people are taking mixed approaches to freelance work in the hopes of getting the preferred outcomes in their careers.

Some are content with moonlighting, doing temporary gig work, or working as independent consultants. Gen Z is also embracing other freelance approaches that are more in line with founding a company or operating as portfolio careerists.

Today, young Americans look at work from a more modern, entrepreneurial standpoint. Part of this involves finding professions they’re passionate about and then setting their own schedules and work sites. It is through these avenues that Gen Z feels most empowered to manage their career paths and take advantage of worthwhile opportunities.

Upwork’s findings show that most young people who opt for freelance work are choosing in-demand fields. Design, computer programming, content writing, and social media content management each fall under this bracket.
