Historic Spacewalks Mark a Turning Point for ISS Maintenance

Three spacewalks outside the International Space Station (ISS) this August were urgent and historic operations of the year. They involved astronauts Anil Menon of NASA and Sophie Adenot of the European Space Agency.

The pair conducted multiple spacewalks throughout the month. Each time astronauts exited the ISS was essential to keeping the aging orbital laboratory functioning safely as it approaches its planned retirement phase.

Spacewalks Making History

Their August 18 spacewalk — Menon’s second in a row and Adenot’s first — was particularly significant. NASA emphasized the need to replace a failing high‑speed antenna that supports critical communications between the ISS and mission control.

Without the fix, data transfer and navigation support for arriving spacecraft could have been compromised.

Astronauts Who Took Part in the August Spacewalks

Menon, who is on his first mission to space, completed three consecutive spacewalks: August 6, August 18, and August 25.

Adenot joined him for the latter two, becoming the first French woman to perform a spacewalk and the fifth French astronaut overall to do so.

Other astronauts involved in August ISS operations included NASA’s Jessica Meir, who partnered with Menon during the August 6 EVA, and members of Expedition 75 currently aboard the station: Jack Hathaway, Andrey Fedyaev, Pyotr Dubrov, and Anna Kikina.

Why the Spacewalks Were Urgent

The August spacewalks formed a three‑part maintenance campaign designed to stabilize ISS systems and prepare the station for future operations — including eventual deorbit planning.

Key urgent tasks included:

  • Replacing a failing high‑speed antenna This antenna supports space‑to‑ground communications essential for navigation, science data transfer, and spacecraft docking.
  • Connecting new power and data‑relay cables These upgrades strengthen the station’s electrical backbone and ensure redundancy for critical systems.
  • Installing docking navigation aids These devices help guide visiting spacecraft safely to the station — a necessity as commercial missions are increasing.
  • Preparing the 3B power channel for new solar arrays The ISS requires expanded power capacity to support life‑support systems, experiments, and visiting vehicles.

NASA noted that these repairs could not be delayed. The ISS, now more than 25 years old, relies on continuous maintenance to remain safe for its multinational crew.

The International Space Station: A Global Laboratory

For more than two decades, the ISS has orbited roughly 260 miles above Earth, serving as a microgravity research hub and a symbol of international cooperation. Operated jointly by NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA, and CSA, the station has hosted more than 290 visitors from 26 countries.

Its longevity depends on spacewalks like those performed in August — each one a high‑stakes operation that keeps the station functioning.

What’s Next for ISS Operations

At the time of writing, NASA’s next spacewalk — scheduled for August 25, 2026 — is being livestreamed on X. This EVA marks the sixth of the year and continues the urgent maintenance cycle.

Menon and Adenot’s work is part of a broader modernization effort aimed at extending the ISS’s life while preparing for other missions. The future holds Artemis lunar operations and commercial space station development.
