Influencer Sara Gilson was fatally shot by her estranged husband in an apparent murder-suicide in Oklahoma, just weeks after she publicly accused him of being a pedophile and sought an emergency protective order. Newly released medical-examiner findings have now confirmed that Gilson died from a gunshot wound to the head, with her death classified as a homicide. Her estranged husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which was ruled a suicide.

The July 23 tragedy in Owasso, Oklahoma, has drawn renewed attention because of the increasingly serious allegations surrounding Duffey before his death, including an investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct involving a 15-year-old girl on a youth basketball team he coached.

Influencer Sara Gilson: Cause of Death Confirmed

According to Oklahoma Chief Medical Examiner documents, Gilson, 43, died from a gunshot wound to the head. The medical examiner classified the manner of death as homicide.

Duffey, 48, was also found dead inside Gilson's home. His death was classified as suicide, and the toxicology analysis was reportedly negative.

Police arrived at the residence after receiving a 911 call from a child living at the home. Dispatch audio reportedly captured a woman screaming and crying in the background before a loud bang was heard.

The disturbing call prompted police to rush to the residence. When officers arrived, they discovered Gilson and Duffey with fatal gunshot wounds.

The circumstances transformed what had already been a troubling domestic dispute into a murder-suicide investigation.

The 911 Call and Final Moments

The emergency call has become one of the most chilling elements of the case.

According to the supplied reporting, a dispatcher told responding officers that a female could be heard “screaming and crying” in the background. A loud bang was subsequently heard.

Dispatchers also reportedly referenced a male authorities had been seeking in connection with an earlier incident involving a juvenile and a firearm.

By approximately 11:18 p.m., officers had reached the home and found the two victims.

The presence of a child in the residence adds another disturbing dimension to the tragedy. The child was the person who alerted emergency services, according to the reporting.

Gilson's Allegations Against Duffey

Weeks before her death, Gilson had publicly accused Duffey of being a pedophile.

On June 10, she filed an emergency protective order against her estranged husband. The order required Duffey to leave their home and stay at least 100 yards away from her. The protective order was subsequently extended through Aug. 24.

The allegations became even more serious when a separate protective order was filed on behalf of a 15-year-old girl who had played on a youth basketball team coached by Duffey.

According to the Owasso Police Department's account provided in the source material, the teenager and her mother reported alleged inappropriate conduct after another coach reportedly witnessed an incident and intervened.

Police said Duffey fled the scene and had not been located by authorities afterward.

The department also said similar alleged conduct involving the same juvenile had reportedly been described across multiple law-enforcement jurisdictions and states. Authorities identified the alleged offense as “Lewd Molestation of a Minor” and said the case had been referred to the U.S. Attorney's Office for review.

These allegations were never adjudicated against Duffey because he died before the investigation could proceed to a criminal trial. They therefore should not be treated as a criminal conviction.

The “Netflix Documentary” TikTok

Gilson's social-media activity shortly before her death has become another major part of the story.

Less than two weeks before the murder-suicide, she posted a TikTok video referencing a popular social-media trend in which people pretend they are being interviewed for a Netflix documentary about a traumatic or unusual experience.

In her version of the trend, Gilson referred to her soon-to-be ex-husband and accused him of being a pedophile. She indicated that she wished the situation were not real.

The post gained attention because of its proximity to her death.

Her allegations were particularly significant in light of the protective orders and police investigation that had already developed around Duffey.

From Domestic Conflict to Murder-Suicide

The sequence of events shows how quickly the situation escalated.

Gilson and Duffey were estranged. Gilson had obtained legal protection from him. A separate protective-order proceeding involving a teenage girl had also emerged, and police were investigating alleged conduct involving the minor.

Duffey was reportedly being sought by authorities when the fatal shooting occurred.

On July 23, police were called to Gilson's home after the child's emergency call. Gilson and Duffey were subsequently found dead.

The medical examiner's findings now provide an official determination of the deaths: Gilson was the victim of homicide, while Duffey's death was classified as suicide.

A Case That Raises Questions About Domestic Violence and Child Safety

The tragedy has brought together several difficult issues: domestic violence, protective orders, allegations involving a minor, social-media warnings and the challenge of intervening when an individual may pose a threat to others.

A protective order can provide legal restrictions, but it cannot by itself guarantee physical safety. In Gilson's case, the order required Duffey to remain away from her, yet the deadly confrontation ultimately occurred at her home.

The case also demonstrates why allegations involving children require careful investigation. Police had referred the alleged molestation matter for federal review, but Duffey died before the allegations could be resolved in court.

For that reason, the distinction between an allegation and a proven crime remains important even as investigators and the public examine what happened.
