As the nation gears up for the 250th anniversary of Independence Day on Saturday, July 4, many Americans are wondering what services and businesses will be open on Friday, July 3 — the day the holiday is observed by the federal government.

With Independence Day falling on a weekend this year, federal offices, post offices, and most banks will be closed on Friday in observance of the holiday. However, many retail stores, delivery services, and other businesses will remain open for normal operations.

This year’s semiquincentennial — America’s 250th birthday — adds extra significance to the celebrations, with fireworks, parades, and festivities planned across the country. For those planning errands or travel ahead of the long weekend, understanding what’s open and closed is key to avoiding frustration.

Banks and financial institutions will generally be open on Friday but may have adjusted hours, while the stock market will be closed. The USPS will operate normally on Friday but will have no delivery on Saturday. Delivery services like UPS and FedEx will have modified schedules.

Most major retailers, including Walmart, Target, and grocery chains, will be open on Friday with standard hours. However, government services like the DMV vary by state, so checking local schedules is essential.

As families prepare for barbecues, fireworks, and gatherings to mark this historic milestone, knowing the logistics for the holiday weekend will help ensure smooth plans.
