A Celebrity Crime Story Returns to the Spotlight

By Samuel A. Lopez – USA Herald

In an extraordinary twist of celebrity and crime, Kim Kardashian will take the stand on May 13 in a long-awaited criminal trial nearly nine years after being robbed at gunpoint in a Paris, at Hôtel de Pourtalès, also known as the No Address Hotel. The suspects, dubbed the “grandpa robbers” due to their advanced ages—ranging from mid-60s to 70s—are finally facing trial for what remains one of the most shocking celebrity heists of the 21st century.

The trial, scheduled from April 28 to May 23, is unfolding inside the halls of France’s criminal courts, where 10 men face charges of armed robbery, gang membership, and kidnapping. It’s a surreal sequel to a nightmare that began in the glittering shadows of Paris Fashion Week.

The Night Kim Was Bound, Gagged, and Left in the Bathroom

October 3, 2016. Kim Kardashian was alone inside her suite at the No Address Hotel in Paris. Her bodyguard had stepped out with her sisters, and her security vulnerabilities—amplified by her real-time social media posts—were allegedly exploited by masked men posing as police.

Two of the robbers, she later told interviewers, burst into her room with a handcuffed hotel employee who reportedly opened the door for them. She was dragged out of bed, zip-tied, duct-taped, and left alone in the bathroom as they looted over $10 million in jewelry, including her $4 million engagement ring from then-husband Kanye West.

Kardashian told David Letterman during a 2020 interview. “He grabbed me and pulled me toward him, but I wasn’t wearing anything underneath. So I was like, ‘OK, this is the time I’m going to get raped. Just deal, it’s gonna happen. Just prepare yourself.’ So I did… But then he tied me up with handcuffs and zip ties and duct tape.”

What the robbers didn’t know was that they would leave behind more than stolen diamonds—they would leave a trail of clues and public outrage that would fuel a years-long investigation.

“We can confirm that Ms. Kardashian will be testifying in person at the upcoming French criminal trial involving the 2016 incident in which she was bound and robbed at gunpoint by a number of masked assailants,” Kardashian’s lawyer Michael Rhodes said in a statement in a recent statement.

Kardashian, according to her lawyer, has “tremendous appreciation and admiration for the French judicial system”and “wishes for the trial to proceed in an orderly fashion in accordance with French law and with respect for all parties to the case.”

How the Internet May Have Fueled the Heist

Kardashian’s real-time Snapchat posts were later scrutinized. She had posted her location, her jewelry, and the fact that she was alone.

“I was Snapchatting that I was home and that everyone was going out,” she further detailed on Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2017. “So, I think they knew Pascal was out with Kourtney and I was there by myself.”

In later interviews, Kardashian has since revealed that she no longer posts on social media in real-time.

“I learned from a bad experience I had when I was robbed that people really knew my every move,” she said at a conference in 2019. “They knew what I had, they knew where I was, what I was doing, and that to me really changed the things that I post.”

Kardashian, once the queen of real-time sharing, now delays posts until after she’s left a location.

“I still want people to feel like they’re on that journey with me,” she explained. “But I might video something, then post it 30 minutes later when I’ve left the location, for more privacy.”

The Trial of the Grandpa Gangsters

The accused—some of whom are grandfathers—include men like Aomar Ait Khedache (“Old Omar”), 68, who has admitted involvement but denies leading the gang. Another, Yunice Abbas, 71, allegedly fled the scene on a bicycle. Several suspects dispute the accusations outright.

Twelve individuals were originally charged in the 2016 heist. One died, and one—Pierre Bouianere, 80—will be tried separately due to medical complications. The ten now standing trial face severe penalties if convicted, and at their age, its likely to be a life-sentence.

Kardashian’s testimony could be the trial’s pivotal moment. Her presence in court brings gravity to proceedings that might otherwise seem surreal. She isn’t just a celebrity witness—she’s a victim still processing the trauma. Her appearance, is both a statement of courage and respect for the French judicial system.
