The Defense's Final Pitch

Attorneys for both sides delivered closing arguments Thursday before jurors began deliberating. Kevin Reddington, Clancy's attorney, reiterated the defense's core argument: that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis when she used exercise bands to kill her children inside their home, before attempting to take her own life by jumping from a window. That fall left her paralyzed, and she has appeared throughout the trial in a wheelchair.

"This young lady is not guilty of the killing of her children because she was suffering from a disease and defect," Reddington told jurors, adding that he believed prosecutors would ultimately fail to prove otherwise.

Defining a Rare Condition

According to the UK's National Health Service, postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious mental illness that can strike shortly after childbirth, one that medical professionals classify as a genuine medical emergency requiring immediate treatment — a definition central to the defense's argument that Clancy's actions stemmed from illness rather than intent.

A Tense Exchange in Court

One of the sharper moments during closing arguments came when Reddington turned directly toward the prosecution table, demanding an explanation for why prosecutors had spent roughly a week attempting to argue that Clancy's suicide attempt wasn't genuinely serious. The judge quickly intervened, instructing Reddington to direct his remarks solely to the jury rather than opposing counsel.

The Prosecution's Counterargument

Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague didn't dispute that Clancy suffered from mental illness — but she drew a sharp legal distinction, telling jurors that Clancy was still capable of distinguishing right from wrong at the moment she killed her children.

"It's not the system or the DSM that caused her to strangle her kids," Sprague told the jury, referencing the U.S. manual of mental health diagnoses — a manual that notably does not include postpartum psychosis as a recognized diagnosis in its own right.

A Mother Who Hid Her Darkest Thoughts

Sprague also argued that Clancy had shown what she described as an "abundance of care" toward her children, while simultaneously concealing troubling thoughts about harming them from the doctors treating her — a contradiction prosecutors say undercuts the defense's narrative of an illness that overwhelmed her without warning.
