The lawsuit comes amid heightened debate about the independence of the Federal Reserve, a cornerstone of U.S. economic stability. If Trump’s removal attempt were upheld, legal scholars warn, it could set a precedent allowing presidents to reshape the Fed at will — undermining the very insulation from politics the FRA was designed to protect.
Cook, one of the first Black women to serve on the Fed’s board, was confirmed by the Senate in 2022. Her tenure has been closely watched as both historically significant and central to decisions steering U.S. monetary policy.
