CULIACÁN, Mexico — Mexican Influencer Cesar Gastélum, a 24-year-old TikTok creator was fatally shot while livestreaming.  He was performing a social media stunt outside a KFC restaurant in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

The killing has drawn international attention and renewed concerns about cartel violence in Mexico. Gastélum was broadcasting live to his followers while filming comedy-style content with two friends when the attack occurred.

Moments before the shooting, Gastélum reportedly noticed a motorcycle circling the area and said, "Those guys scare me."

Minutes later, a gunman riding on the motorcycle allegedly approached and shot him at close range before fleeing with an accomplice.

Mexican authorities have opened a homicide investigation as officials work to determine whether the killing is connected to organized crime or cartel activity in Sinaloa.

TikTok Livestream Captured Final Moments of Mexican Influencer 

Gastélum had built a substantial audience on TikTok, where he attracted more than 650,000 followers by posting videos featuring comedy skits, lifestyle content and short-form social media entertainment.

During Tuesday night's livestream, he and two friends stood near the drive-thru outside a KFC restaurant while pretending to be food delivery workers as part of an online performance.

According to Mexican media reports, one of his companions warned him about a nearby motorcycle.

"The motorcycle, the motorcycle," the friend reportedly said.

Gastélum answered with an uneasy smile, saying, "Those guys scare me."

Witnesses said the motorcycle returned shortly afterward. The passenger allegedly approached Gastélum and fired a fatal shot before the suspects escaped.

The livestream ended abruptly, shocking viewers watching the broadcast in real time.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Orders Full Investigation

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing and pledged that investigators would identify everyone responsible.

She said authorities must arrest both the gunmen and anyone who may have ordered the assassination while determining the motive behind the homicide.

Investigators have not announced whether Gastélum was specifically targeted because of his online presence or whether the attack is linked to organized crime.

Sinaloa Cartel Violence May Have Continued to Grip Culiacán

The killing occurred in Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa, where rival criminal organizations have battled for influence in recent years.

The Sinaloa Cartel remains one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world. U.S. officials have identified the organization as a major producer and trafficker of fentanyl and other illegal narcotics entering the United States.

Authorities continue to investigate whether the murder has any connection to ongoing conflict between factions commonly known as Los Chapitos and Los Mayos.

Gastélum described himself online as a "belico," a slang expression associated with Mexico's narcoculture that translates roughly as "warlike." Officials have not said whether that description or any of his social media content played a role in the homicide investigation.

Reports have also noted that rival cartel factions have historically left symbolic items at crime scenes. Gastélum reportedly was wearing a white sombrero shortly before the attack, although investigators have not suggested that this establishes any affiliation.

Friend Pays Emotional Tribute to Mexican Influencer

Alejandro Fierro, who appeared alongside Gastélum during the livestream, shared emotional messages on Instagram following the killing.

"I don't understand the situation, and I don't think I ever will," Fierro wrote.

In another post, he described Gastélum as a close friend and said they were simply "two young guys with a dream who weren't hurting anyone."

The tragedy has generated widespread reactions across social media, where fans expressed condolences and called for justice.

Second High-Profile Mexican Influencer Livestream Murder

Gastélum's death comes about a year after Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, 23, was fatally shot while livestreaming from her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco.

Mexican prosecutors later accused alleged Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación leader Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala of ordering the killing after Márquez ended a relationship with his son. Authorities say the suspected gunman remains at large.

The two livestream killings have heightened concerns about the safety of social media personalities operating in areas affected by organized crime and cartel violence.
