A former Cadillac couple has been held accountable for the severe abuse of two of their adopted children. Jessica Klimp, 45, and Jason Klimp, 47, were sentenced in the Wexford County 28th Circuit Court on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. This sentencing follows their previous conviction in Tennessee, finalizing a legal process that exposed the horrific conditions the children endured while under the couple's care.

The sentences handed down in Michigan are significant, as they have been structured to run concurrently with the 10-year prison terms the pair is already serving for related crimes committed in Tennessee. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel officially announced the sentencing, confirming that both defendants pleaded no contest to two counts each of first-degree child abuse.

The Details of the Sentence

The court records indicate that Jessica Klimp was sentenced to eight years, three months, and four days in prison. Jason Klimp received a nearly identical sentence of eight years, three months, and nine days. These terms were meticulously aligned with the plea agreement established following their October 2025 conviction in Tennessee. By allowing the sentences to run concurrently, the legal systems in both states effectively coordinated the resolution of this harrowing case.

A Pattern of Neglect and Cruelty

The investigation into the Klimp family began in February 2024 while the family was staying at a rental property in Tennessee. Authorities were alerted to the situation when one of the adopted children required emergency medical intervention. The child was rushed to the University of Tennessee Hospital and subsequently transferred to the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. Upon evaluation, medical staff identified symptoms of severe dehydration and extreme malnutrition.

As investigators delved deeper into the family dynamic, they uncovered a disturbing pattern of control and starvation. It was determined that two of the adopted children had been kept severely underweight. According to reports from the investigation, these children were fed nothing but liquid food, and even that limited intake was restricted to only when the parents allowed it under strict supervision.

Disturbing Discoveries in Michigan

The scope of the investigation widened significantly once authorities focused on the family’s primary residence in Wexford County, Michigan. Upon executing a search warrant at the home, Michigan State Police officers discovered evidence that shocked even veteran investigators.

Inside one of the bedrooms, authorities located a straitjacket, which suggested that the children had been physically restrained. The room was further modified with security alarms installed on the bedroom door, intended to monitor or restrict movement. Most disturbing of all were the dog cages found within the home, which officials believe were utilized to confine the children against their will.

The Path to Justice

The Wexford County Prosecutor’s Office initially leveled charges against the couple in February 2024. The legal proceedings eventually spanned two different state jurisdictions. After pleading guilty to one count each of aggravated child abuse in the Tennessee case, the couple was sentenced to a decade in prison. Following the conclusion of those proceedings, they were extradited from Tennessee back to Michigan to face the additional child abuse charges that led to the most recent sentencing.

The Future for the Children

While the legal proceedings have now concluded, the personal impact of this case remains profound. Jason and Jessica Klimp were the parents of four adopted children and four biological children. In the wake of these revelations and the subsequent legal fallout, authorities have confirmed that the couple’s parental rights have been terminated. This action ensures that the children are now removed from the abusive environment and placed under the protection of the state, hopefully providing them a chance to heal from the trauma they experienced.
