NASA’s Moon Comeback Accelerates: After Artemis II Triumph, the Race to Build a Lunar Base Is On

The splashdown was just the beginning.

After a dramatic 10-day journey that carried astronauts farther than any crew has traveled in more than half a century, Artemis II returned safely to Earth last week. But behind the celebration, a far bigger mission is already unfolding—one that could reshape humanity’s future in space.

NASA isn’t slowing down. It’s speeding up.

The four-person crew of Artemis II traveled a staggering 695,081 miles, looping around the far side of the moon for the first time in over 50 years before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. The milestone marks a powerful return to deep space—and a clear signal that the next phase is already underway.

"We are just getting going," NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said Monday on “Good Morning America,” underscoring the urgency and ambition driving the agency forward.

"We got the mandate, the resources, we have a successful mission -- Artemis II -- under our belt. We are just getting going,"

The message is clear: Artemis II wasn’t the destination. It was the launchpad.

Artemis III Faces High-Stakes Reset

The next mission, Artemis III, is now scheduled for 2027—but not without significant changes that highlight the risks ahead.

Originally envisioned as a triumphant return of humans to the lunar surface, the plan has shifted. Instead, the mission will focus on critical testing in Earth orbit, including rendezvous and docking maneuvers between the Orion spacecraft and commercial partners.

The change comes after a sobering assessment from the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, which labeled the original timeline as "high risk."

That warning forced NASA to recalibrate.

Now, Artemis III will serve as a proving ground—testing the exact technologies needed to safely land astronauts on the moon in future missions. NASA says more details, including the crew and final design, will be revealed closer to launch.

Artemis IV Targets Historic Moon Landing

If Artemis III is about reducing risk, Artemis IV is about delivering results.

Targeted for early 2028, the mission aims to achieve what hasn’t been done since 1972: land humans on the moon.

After entering lunar orbit, Orion will dock with a commercial lander developed by either SpaceX or Blue Origin. Two astronauts will transfer to the lander and descend to the lunar surface—marking a historic return.

But this time, NASA is going somewhere entirely new.

The mission is set to land near the moon’s South Pole, a region never explored by humans. Scientists believe the area contains significant amounts of water—an essential resource that could unlock long-term survival on the moon.

Astronauts are expected to spend about a week there, conducting experiments and collecting samples that NASA says will "expand our understanding of our Solar System and home planet."

Artemis V and the $20 Billion Moon Base Vision

Then comes Artemis V—arguably the most ambitious step yet.

Scheduled for late 2028, it will be the fourth crewed Artemis mission and the second to land on the moon. But its true purpose goes far beyond exploration.

It’s about building a permanent human presence.

Last month, NASA leaders unveiled a sweeping $20 billion plan to construct a sustainable lunar base. Artemis V is expected to kick off that effort, laying the groundwork for a future where astronauts don’t just visit the moon—they live and work there.

The long-term vision is bold: land crews every six months, using commercial partnerships to steadily expand infrastructure on the lunar surface.

Over time, that base could become a critical stepping stone for an even bigger goal—sending humans to Mars.

A New Space Race Is Already Underway

With Artemis II now complete, NASA has crossed a critical threshold. The technology is advancing, the funding is in motion, and the timeline—though challenging—is accelerating.

But the stakes are enormous.

Every mission carries risk. Every delay could shift the balance in a rapidly evolving global space race.

For now, one thing is certain: the path back to the moon is no longer theoretical.

It’s happening.
