A New York Times technology executive was fatally shot Saturday afternoon at a California sports complex, and police arrested his elderly in-laws in connection with the killing. Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California, shortly after 3 p.m., according to Dublin police.

Police identified the suspects as Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77, a married couple who are McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Both were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail. The investigation remains active.

Police Respond to Dublin Sports Grounds

Dublin Police Services said a sergeant was driving near Dublin Sports Grounds at about 3:08 p.m. Saturday when he saw a man lying in the parking lot.

Officers responding to the scene found McKinsey suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel attempted to provide assistance, but McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said witnesses helped officers locate and detain the two suspects within minutes. Authorities said there was no outstanding suspect and no known continuing threat to public safety.

The Dublin Police Department's official account of the homicide investigation identifies McKinsey and the two suspects and says detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

New York Times Confirms McKinsey’s Employment

McKinsey worked for The New York Times, where he held a senior engineering leadership position involving the newspaper’s Games products.

A Times spokesperson confirmed that McKinsey was the victim and said he had worked for the newspaper since 2023.

McKinsey's career in technology spanned nearly two decades. Before joining The New York Times, he held engineering and management positions involving organizations including NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Oracle, Coursera, UKG and Splunk.

At The Times, he initially worked as a senior engineering manager for the Games platform. He later became director of engineering for games player experience, where he was involved with products serving millions of puzzle players.

In-Laws Arrested in Homicide Investigation

Police identified Zhang and Chen as McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Both were arrested on suspicion of murder.

Additional reporting has indicated that the couple and McKinsey had family ties through McKinsey’s marriage to their daughter. Authorities have not publicly announced a motive for the shooting.

The circumstances leading up to the confrontation remain under investigation. Police have not announced whether the suspects knew McKinsey would be at the sports complex or provided a detailed account of what investigators believe happened immediately before the shooting.

Because the investigation is ongoing, allegations regarding motive or the precise circumstances of the shooting have not been established in court.

McKinsey’s Technology Career

McKinsey built his technology career through a series of engineering and management positions before moving into digital product leadership.

He earned a master's degree in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2015.

At The New York Times, his work was connected to the Games division, which includes popular puzzle products such as Connections.

The Times has expanded its digital subscription business around games and other products, making engineering infrastructure and player experience important components of the company's digital strategy.

A LinkedIn commenter identified as Nathan Wu, who said he had worked at UC Berkeley, posted a brief tribute to McKinsey following news of his death.

Investigation of New York Times Tech Murder Active

Dublin police said detectives are continuing to examine evidence to determine what led to the killing.

Investigators have asked anyone with information about the case to contact Dublin Police Services. Authorities said the cooperation of witnesses and community members was critical to the rapid arrest of the two suspects.

The case is expected to move through the Alameda County court system as prosecutors review the evidence and determine what charges will formally be pursued.

The arrests are allegations at this stage. Zhang and Chen are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court.
