The Pentagon confirmed plans to deploy roughly 3,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, intensifying the U.S. military presence already bolstered by thousands of Marines assisting operations related to Iran.

Troop Buildup Signals Escalation

While no decisions have been made to send troops into Iran directly, officials said the deployment marks a sharp escalation in the ongoing U.S.-Israel operations against Tehran.

The 82nd Airborne, known for its rapid global response, can mobilize within 18 hours, but it remains unclear if this capability will be employed for immediate regional action.

Airstrikes and Strategic Targets

The deployment comes nearly a month after U.S. airstrikes against Iranian forces and infrastructure began, amid skyrocketing gas prices triggered by Iran’s partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for nearly 20% of global oil supplies.

U.S. Central Command said Tuesday that air and missile attacks have destroyed “more than 9,000 military targets” since February 28. Strikes hit missile launchers, naval facilities, and the defense industrial base, reportedly eliminating dozens of senior regime figures.

Regional Presence and Potential for Action

The U.S. currently maintains around 50,000 troops in the region. The addition of 3,000 soldiers hints at potential future actions, including securing the Strait of Hormuz or expanding operations within Iran.

Defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed internal planning for the deployment, which The New York Times first reported.

Iran Retaliation and Public Opinion

Iran has continued launching drones and ballistic missiles targeting Israel and other nations. This comes after President Donald Trump announced a temporary pause on strikes against Iranian power plants amid “productive talks” toward a potential peace agreement—though Tehran denies direct negotiations.

Meanwhile, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows declining U.S. public support for the conflict: only 35% of Americans approve of the strikes, down from 37% last week, while 61% disapprove.
