Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon when a small plane crashed in a park in the Torresdale neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia, officials said.

Emergency Landing in Fluehr Park

The Piper PA-28, a four-seat aircraft, went down around 3:30 p.m. near Fluehr Park at Grant and Torresdale avenues, just south of Northeast Philadelphia Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. One passenger was extricated by firefighters, and both occupants were hospitalized in serious condition.

Fly Legacy Aviation, a Philadelphia-based flight school, told 6abc the plane experienced a loss of power over the Delaware River, forcing the instructor and student pilot to make an emergency landing.

Video footage captured by 6abc shows the aircraft smashed against a tree, with the nose destroyed and debris scattered across the park.

Response and Investigation

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson said the pilot was trying to return to Northeast Philadelphia Airport when they issued a distress call. The crash caused a small fuel spill, but no fire erupted.

The FAA’s aircraft registry lists the single-engine plane as a 2021 model, registered to an owner in New York. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the crash.
