The Rumored PlayStation 6 Handheld

Another major topic surrounding Sony’s next generation is the possibility of a dedicated handheld device, internally referred to in reports as “Project Canis.”

Bloomberg previously reported that Sony was exploring handheld hardware. Subsequent documentation leaks and developer kit updates have fueled speculation. Some PS5 development tools now emphasize “Low Power Mode” optimization, which industry observers interpret as groundwork for portable hardware compatibility.

Tentative Handheld Specs (Unconfirmed)

• Custom 3nm AMD APU
• Zen 6-based CPU configuration with dedicated low-power cores for the operating system
• RDNA 5 GPU with docked and handheld performance scaling
• LPDDR5X memory on a 192-bit controller
• Raster performance estimated at roughly half of the base PS5 in handheld mode, with stronger relative ray tracing efficiency

While some fans worry that supporting handheld hardware could limit flagship console games, developers have suggested cross-platform PC optimization may have a greater influence on design constraints.
