Prince Andrew Titles

In a dramatic move, Prince Andrew, 65, has announced that he is giving up his royal titles, including his designation as the Duke of York, amid renewed pressure over his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. All Prince Andrew titles were voluntarily given up.

Prince Andrew Relinquishes His Titles

In a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Friday, October 17, the Prince said he decided after consulting with King Charles III and other family members.

“In discussion with the King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Prince Andrew said.
“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first.”

Buckingham Palace has confirmed the Duke of York will no longer use his title or royal honors following ongoing scrutiny over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

The full statement can be read on the official Royal Family website.

Prince Andrew Titles: No Longer the Duke of York

Prince Andrew’s decision marks the first time in modern royal history that a senior member of the family has voluntarily relinquished a hereditary title. He will remain a prince, but will cease to be the Duke of York, a title granted to him by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, upon his marriage to Sarah Ferguson in 1986.

The Prince also confirmed he would relinquish his membership in the Order of the Garter, one of the United Kingdom’s oldest and most prestigious chivalric honors and orders.

“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further,” he added. “I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

However, to formally remove his ducal title from the peerage rolls, an Act of Parliament would still be required.

Scandals and Fallout

Prince Andrew’s reputation has been marred by a string of controversies, primarily linked to his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and a civil lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre, which was settled out of court. The prince has long denied all allegations of misconduct.

Despite his 2019 BBC interview — where he claimed to have severed ties with Epstein — leaked emails later suggested he remained in contact with the financier months afterward. One 2011 exchange read, “Keep in close touch and we’ll play some more soon!”

In addition to the Epstein scandal, Andrew has faced questions regarding his personal finances and alleged connections to a Chinese intelligence operative.

What It Means for Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie

Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their titles and positions within the royal family. While neither serves as a full-time working royal, both continue to hold the honorific “Princess.”

According to People, their roles are unlikely to change following their father’s decision, though public scrutiny surrounding their branch of the royal family may increase.

A Royal Family in Transition

The move underscores King Charles III’s effort to streamline the monarchy and distance the institution from scandal. Royal watchers see this as part of the King’s broader modernization push — maintaining public trust while minimizing controversy.

As Andrew steps further away from public life, the monarchy appears intent on redefining its image for a new era — one that demands greater transparency and accountability from even its most senior members.
