Publix Blueberry Recall Escalates to FDA’s Highest Danger Rating

publix blueberry recall

A carton of frozen berries sitting quietly in a freezer might sound harmless enough — but federal regulators are now warning it could be anything but. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified an ongoing recall of frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold at Publix as its highest-risk category, following an E. coli contamination scare that's already made a dozen people sick.

The Recall's New Danger Rating

In an online enforcement report posted Tuesday, the FDA designated the recall — first initiated on June 25 — as a class I event, the agency's most severe classification. That label signals "a reasonable probability" that eating the contaminated berries could "cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to FDA guidelines.

The Outbreak Behind the Recall

The recalled products, organic frozen whole blueberries and mixed berries sold under the GreenWise brand, have been directly linked to an active E. coli outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of July 30, the outbreak had sickened 12 people across two states, with four requiring hospitalization — numbers that health officials warn could still climb as investigations continue.

Understanding the Health Risk

For most healthy individuals, eating food contaminated with E. coli typically triggers stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting that resolve on their own without medical intervention. But the calculus changes dramatically for immunocompromised individuals, who face the risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome — a life-threatening condition in which blood clots form throughout the body, including within vital organs.

How the Recall Unfolded

The chain of events started upstream, with supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. announcing in early July that it was recalling a single lot of frozen organic GreenWise blueberries shipped to Publix stores. Publix followed suit weeks later, expanding the recall significantly after gathering additional epidemiological evidence — broadening it to cover more product types and bag sizes than the original, narrower recall.

Already Off Shelves, But Not Necessarily Out of Freezers

According to Publix's recall announcement, the affected products were pulled from store shelves by late June 2026. But the recall's real danger now lies in consumers' own homes — the berries may still be sitting in freezers across the affected region, and anyone who has them is urged to discard the products rather than risk consumption.

Which Products Are Affected

The recall spans all lots of GreenWise organic frozen whole blueberries and mixed berries, identified by specific UPC codes. The affected items were sold across Publix locations in eight states.

The Specific Products Under Recall

  • GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10-ounce, UPC 41415-06453
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48-ounce, UPC 41415-12053
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10-ounce, UPC 41415-06753
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48-ounce, UPC 41415-12153
  • GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries, 10-ounce, lot code 60401, best-by date of Feb. 9, 2028

Where the Berries Were Sold

The recalled frozen berries reached store shelves in:

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Kentucky
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia

Of the confirmed outbreak cases tracked by the CDC, 11 originated in Florida and one in Georgia — a concentration that mirrors the product's regional distribution footprint.

Why the Berries Pose a Risk

The organic frozen berries are being pulled from circulation because they may carry E. coli, a bacteria capable of causing serious foodborne illness.

What an E. Coli Infection Looks Like

Not all strains of E. coli are dangerous — plenty exist harmlessly in the human gut. But the strain tied to this recall is Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, a variety known for causing significant gastrointestinal distress. According to the CDC, the most common symptoms include:

  • Severe stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea, often bloody
  • Vomiting

Symptoms typically surface within three to four days of eating contaminated food, and most otherwise healthy adults recover without needing formal treatment. But the CDC warns that certain groups face a much steeper risk, given the potential for hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can also trigger kidney failure. Young children, older adults, pregnant individuals and people with weakened immune systems are all considered especially vulnerable to severe complications.

What to Do If You Have the Recalled Berries

The recalled frozen blueberries and mixed berries are no longer available for purchase in stores, but anyone who already has them at home should not eat them under any circumstances. Instead, consumers can either discard the recalled berries entirely or return them to Publix for a full refund.
