A Philadelphia teacher and activist described online as a “race faker” has admitted that she misrepresented her racial and ethnic background for years, including claims that she was Black and Palestinian. 

Hannah Gann, who works at The Workshop School in West Philadelphia, said in a social media video that she “hid the truth or outright lied” about her background and acknowledged that she has no Palestinian or Tunisian heritage.

Race Faker works in Racial Justice Organizations

Gann had been active in Philadelphia’s pro-Palestinian and racial justice movements, including the Racial Justice Organizing Committee and Philly Educators for Palestine. The two organizations said they confronted Gann about her background and that, after more than an hour of questioning, she admitted she had lied.

In a joint statement, the organizations said Gann had claimed at various times to be Palestinian, Tunisian and Black. They said they asked her to publicly acknowledge that she is a white woman of Jewish heritage and comes from an Israeli settler family.

The organizations subsequently said they would no longer work with Gann or allow her to participate in their organizing spaces. They said her actions caused harm to Palestinians, members of the Black community, young people and activists who had trusted her.

Gann Responds with video

Gann addressed the controversy in a roughly 10-minute video posted to social media. She said her statement was not intended as an explanation or excuse and that she was not asking for forgiveness.

“I hid the truth or outright lied about my background to everyone in my life,” Gann said.

She also said no friend, family member, fellow organizer or professional associate knew about her deception. Gann urged people who were angry about her actions not to retaliate against or cast suspicion on people who had previously worked with her.

Race Faker compared to Rachel Dolezal

The controversy has drawn comparisons with Rachel Dolezal, the former NAACP official who became the subject of a national identity controversy in 2015 after her background as a white woman was publicly revealed.

Dolezal, who has also used the name Nkechi Diallo, responded to the Gann controversy on social media and sought to distinguish her own experience from Gann’s case. Dolezal argued that the two situations involved different circumstances and also referenced allegations about Israeli operatives disguising themselves as Palestinians.

Race Faker case Draws National Attention

Gann’s case has received national attention as former colleagues and activist organizations distance themselves from her. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the organizations said the focus should remain on students and communities affected by the controversy.

Gann’s admission comes after years of public involvement in pro-Palestinian activism in Philadelphia. Videos and other material circulating online show her participating in events and speaking about issues including Islamophobia, anti-Black racism and anti-Palestinian racism.

The Philadelphia School District has said it is aware of social media posts concerning a district employee and an outside advocacy organization. The district has also said it is making support available to staff and students at The Workshop School.

The episode has renewed debate over identity, representation and the role of personal identity in racial justice and Palestinian activism. It has also prompted questions among activists about trust and accountability when organizers discover that someone has misrepresented their background.

For Gann, the immediate fallout has included the loss of relationships with organizations with which she previously worked. For those organizations, the controversy has become a broader discussion about how communities respond when claims of identity are found to be false.
