Scott Peterson is once again at the center of national attention as a new A&E documentary revisit one of America's most notorious murder cases. More than two decades after the deaths of his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son, Conner, Peterson's legal team continues to argue he was wrongfully convicted.

The are pointing to what they describe as new evidence that could cast doubt on the prosecution's timeline and conclusions.

The two-part special, Scott Peterson: The New Evidence, examines several arguments advanced by Peterson's attorneys while also revisiting the evidence that led a California jury to convict him in one of the country's most closely followed criminal trials.

The Scott Peterson Case Captivated the Nation

The disappearance of 27-year-old Laci Peterson on Christmas Eve 2002 quickly became one of the biggest crime stories in the United States.

Laci, who was eight months pregnant with the couple's first child, Conner, vanished from the Modesto, California, home she shared with Scott Peterson after reportedly taking the family's dog for a walk.

Scott Peterson told investigators he had spent the morning on a fishing trip at the Berkeley Marina in San Francisco Bay.

Months later, in April 2003, the decomposed remains of Laci Peterson and the body of her unborn son washed ashore along the eastern shoreline of San Francisco Bay, not far from the area where Scott acknowledged he had gone fishing on the day she disappeared.

Medical experts were unable to determine the precise cause of death because of the condition of the remains. However, prosecutors argued that Scott Peterson murdered both Laci and Conner before disposing of their bodies in the bay using homemade concrete anchors.

Peterson was convicted in 2004 of first-degree murder in Laci's death and second-degree murder in the death of Conner.

Affair Became Major Part of Prosecution's Case

One of the most damaging pieces of evidence presented during the trial involved Scott Peterson's affair with massage therapist Amber Frey.

Investigators revealed Peterson began a romantic relationship with Frey while Laci was pregnant. According to court testimony, Peterson falsely told Frey he was a widower and that he had "lost" his wife before Laci was ever reported missing.

After learning Peterson was married and that his wife had disappeared, Frey contacted law enforcement and agreed to assist investigators.

Police secretly recorded dozens of telephone conversations between Frey and Peterson, many of which were played for the jury. Prosecutors argued the recordings demonstrated deception and a lack of concern about Laci's disappearance.

The extramarital affair became a central component of the prosecution's theory that Peterson wanted to escape his marriage and impending fatherhood.

Peterson has consistently denied murdering his wife or unborn son.

Scott Peterson Documentary Revisits Five Key Claims

The A&E documentary focuses on five areas Peterson's defense team believes deserve renewed examination.

Among the most significant claims is whether modern fetal development research suggests Conner may have died later than prosecutors argued during the original trial.

Defense attorneys also cite a new hydrodynamic analysis of San Francisco Bay. Experts retained by the Los Angeles Innocence Project contend tidal patterns may indicate Laci's body entered the water at a different location than prosecutors alleged.

Another issue involves handwritten notes that the defense says Laci wrote regarding equipment for Scott's fishing boat. Peterson's attorneys argue those notes contradict the prosecution's claim that he secretly purchased the boat as part of a murder plan.

The documentary also examines reports from approximately 15 witnesses who claimed they saw a pregnant woman resembling Laci walking her dog after Scott had already left home on Christmas Eve.

Finally, the program revisits a burglary that occurred across the street from the Peterson residence. The defense argues Laci may have encountered the burglars, while prosecutors have long maintained the burglary occurred after she disappeared and was unrelated to the murders.

Courts Have Rejected Scott Peterson Recent Appeals

Many of the arguments featured in the documentary have previously been presented by Peterson's attorneys in court filings.

Earlier this year, Judge Elizabeth Hill rejected a petition filed by the Los Angeles Innocence Project seeking to overturn Peterson's conviction, concluding the defense had not presented sufficient evidence to justify a new trial.

Peterson remains incarcerated at Mule Creek State Prison serving a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

His original death sentence was overturned by the California Supreme Court in 2020 after the court found errors in the jury selection process during the penalty phase. However, the court upheld Peterson's murder convictions.

Renewed Interest in a High-Profile Case

The A&E special follows renewed public fascination with the Peterson case after Peacock released Face to Face with Scott Peterson in 2024.

Like many modern true crime productions, the documentary explores both the prosecution's evidence and the defense's continuing efforts to challenge the conviction.

While Peterson's attorneys argue advances in forensic science and additional witness testimony warrant another review, prosecutors have consistently maintained that the evidence presented at trial overwhelmingly established Peterson's guilt.

More than 20 years after Laci Peterson and her unborn son were killed, the case continues to generate debate among legal experts, investigators and true crime audiences over whether any newly presented evidence could ultimately alter one of the most closely scrutinized murder convictions in recent American history.
