Sen. Durbin Demands DOJ, FBI Probe ‘Pizza-Box Intimidation’ Targeting Federal Judges and Their Families – Party Rhetoric May Have Contributed to the Problem

From the Bench to the Box:

The Chilling Undercurrents Behind Late-Night Deliveries

  1. A Dead Son’s Name, a Chilling Message: Hundreds of anonymous pizza deliveries have been sent to the homes of federal judges—including some in the name of Judge Esther Salas’s murdered son—signaling a new form of personal intimidation.
  2. Judges in the Crosshairs: Many recipients are presiding over cases tied to the Trump administration, and some reports suggest that Supreme Court justices and judges’ children have also been targeted.
  3. Durbin's Call for an Investigation: In a letter obtained by USA Herald, Sen. Dick Durbin calls on the DOJ and FBI to investigate the disturbing trend, safeguard judicial independence, and halt any planned reductions to the U.S. Marshals Service workforce.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It reads like the opening of a political thriller—but this is no work of fiction. In a striking escalation of judicial intimidation, hundreds of unsolicited pizzas have been delivered to the homes of federal judges, including some bearing the name of Daniel Anderl—the late son of U.S. District Judge Esther Salas, who was tragically murdered in 2020 by a disgruntled litigant posing as a deliveryman.

Now, Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Sen. Richard J. Durbin is demanding answers—and action.

In a May 6 letter addressed to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel, Durbin decried the deliveries as “threats intended to show that those seeking to intimidate the targeted judge know the judge’s address or their family members’ addresses.” According to Durbin, some of the deliveries appear to be directed at judges overseeing legal matters tied to the Trump administration—suggesting a disturbing political undertone.

However, critics of Senator Durbin argue that the very atmosphere he now condemns was largely cultivated by the inflammatory rhetoric of his own party. Prominent Democratic figures—most notably Rep. Maxine Waters—have publicly called on supporters to "hit the streets" and "fight back" against the Trump administration, contributing to a climate of political hostility.

Durbin himself has been accused of fueling division, not only between the administration and its opponents, but also between the tens of millions of Americans who voted for Donald Trump and his policy agenda. "Since taking office 72 days ago, the Trump Administration has created chaos on our economy," Durbin declared at the time. "Donald Trump’s ill-conceived, foolish trade war with one of our top allies is the latest example of his continued pain for Americans’ wallets,” said Durbin.

A Modern Threat Masked in Mozzarella

Though harmless at first glance, these unsolicited pizza orders are seen by many within the judiciary as sinister signals: anonymous proof that someone out there knows where they live—and that they’re being watched. The use of Daniel Anderl’s name, in particular, crosses a line for many judges, evoking a tragedy that rocked the judicial community just five years ago.

“These incidents threaten not only judges and their families, but also judicial independence and the rule of law,”Durbin warned in his letter.

Judges have described the deliveries as “alarming,” with one judge saying the tactic was clearly meant to evoke fear rather than feed a craving.

Is the Judiciary the New Front in Political Warfare?

Durbin isn’t alone in his concern. Legal analysts and judicial watchdogs warn that this phenomenon may mark a disturbing shift in how adversaries apply pressure to the federal bench—by turning their private lives into battlefields.

“This is an ominous escalation. When people are willing to exploit a murdered child’s name to intimidate a judge, they’ve gone beyond protest. Now we’re looking at psychological warfare.” - Samuel Lopez, Legal Analyst | USA Herald

Notably, some of the recipients are reportedly Supreme Court justices. Others are judges actively handling politically charged cases involving the Trump administration. It’s not difficult to imagine the potential implications if such intimidation goes unchecked.

Durbin’s 13 Questions—and the Answers He Demands

Durbin's letter includes a detailed list of 13 specific inquiries for the DOJ and FBI. Among them:

  • How many deliveries have occurred since January 2025?
  • Have federal judges' addresses been obtained via violations of the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act?
  • Are there suspects, and if so, is there evidence of coordination among them?
  • Have any prosecutions been initiated?
  • What steps have been taken to prevent further incidents?

Durbin is also demanding a staff-level briefing no later than May 20. “It is imperative that those responsible be held accountable to the full extent of the law,” he emphasized.

The U.S. Marshals Service: A Shrinking Shield?

In a surprising twist, Durbin’s letter also references an April 15 internal letter from U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Acting Director Mark P. Pittella, allegedly offering over 5,000 employees the opportunity to resign.

“In the midst of increasing threats of violence against judges, it is inappropriate and unacceptable to reduce the size of the agency tasked with protecting the federal judiciary and the judicial process,” Durbin asserted.

He’s asking Bondi and Patel not only to stop the shrinkage of USMS, but to commit to expanding it if necessary.

Legal Fallout and the Bigger Picture

Experts warn that if these threats go unpunished—or even worse, uninvestigated—they could embolden future acts of coercion.

The Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act—passed in the wake of the 2020 tragedy—was meant to protect judges by scrubbing their personal info from public databases. Durbin now questions whether delays or violations of that law may have helped the perpetrators access judges’ addresses.

“This is about safeguarding a core pillar of our democracy,” Durbin concluded. “The rule of law depends on an independent, unthreatened judiciary. We cannot allow intimidation to go unchallenged.”
