Blue Moon time

When two full moons occur within the same calendar month, the second full moon is referred to as a blue moon.

This rare astronomical event is eagerly anticipated, as it presents a unique opportunity to witness a slightly larger and brighter full moon known as a "super blue moon." 

Despite the moniker, the "super blue moon" on August 30, 2023, will appear much like any other full moon, providing a magnificent spectacle in the night sky.

The last occurrence of a blue moon was on October 31, 2020, and stargazers will have to wait until May 31, 2026, to witness the next one.

The Perseids Meteor Shower

The Perseids meteor shower will peak on the night of August 12, 2023, and continue into the early morning of August 13, 2023. 

As many as 100 meteors per hour are expected to streak across the sky, making it one of the most popular meteor showers of the year. 

This celestial display can be best observed from dark, cloud-free areas in North America, providing a stunning visual treat for stargazers.

On August 27, 2023, Saturn will reach opposition, a celestial event where the planet appears directly opposite the sun from Earth's perspective. This positioning also makes Saturn the closest to Earth, making it appear bright and prominent in the night sky throughout the entire night.

No telescope is required to witness this awe-inspiring view of one of the largest planets in the solar system. Observers with telescopes may even be able to spot Saturn's iconic rings, making it a delightful experience for both amateur and seasoned astronomers.

The Dance of Sirius and Orion

 As August progresses, the bright star Sirius, also known as the dog star, will once again become visible in the eastern sky before daybreak, just below the constellation Orion. Sirius is no longer rising and setting with the sun. 

Ancient beliefs attributed the additional heat during the summer to the presence of Sirius in the sky, but while that notion has been debunked, the star's nickname continues to endure.

Apart from the "super blue moon" on August 30, the full moons of August carry other intriguing names, such as the Sturgeon Moon, Corn Moon, Mountain Shadow Moon, and Black Cherry Moon.
