A massive SpaceX rocket stage believed to have slammed into the Moon has renewed debate over the growing problem of space junk, as scientists warn that uncontrolled spacecraft and discarded rocket components could threaten future lunar missions.

 The school-bus-sized upper stage, launched by Elon Musk's SpaceX during a 2025 lunar mission, was expected to strike the Moon at approximately 5,400 mph, creating a new crater while raising fresh questions about responsible exploration beyond Earth.

Scientists said the impact posed no danger to Earth but highlighted the increasing challenges of managing human-made debris in space as governments and private companies prepare for a new era of lunar exploration.

SpaceX Explains that the Crash was Unplanned

The object was the second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that launched a Firefly Aerospace lunar lander during a U.S.-Japanese mission in January 2025.

Unlike most Falcon 9 upper stages, which re-enter Earth's atmosphere and burn up or fall into the ocean after completing their mission, this stage remained in space because the lunar mission required additional thrust. After exhausting its fuel, the nearly 40-foot-long, four-metric-ton rocket body drifted uncontrollably through space.

Earlier this year, astronomers determined that gravitational forces combined with solar activity had gradually altered its orbit, placing it on a collision course with the Moon.

SpaceX said the impact was completely unintentional.

Julianna Scheiman, SpaceX's director of NASA science and Dragon programs, said the rocket's trajectory was not the result of a planned maneuver.

Instead, she said the abandoned rocket stage was gradually nudged toward the Moon by a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces.

Scientists predicted the rocket would strike near Einstein Crater on the Moon's western limb at approximately 2:35 a.m. Eastern Time. No lunar spacecraft were positioned to directly observe or film the collision. Confirmation is expected to come later through telescope observations and images collected from Earth.

Researchers believe the impact generated an explosion roughly equivalent to three tons of TNT, excavating a crater estimated to measure about 90 feet wide and 16 feet deep.

Scientists Warn About Growing Space Junk Problem

While experts emphasized that the collision posed no immediate danger, many described it as another warning about the increasing amount of space junk orbiting Earth and traveling throughout the solar system.

Hannah Sergeant of the University of Leicester said uncontrolled impacts should not become routine, particularly as space agencies prepare to establish permanent lunar operations.

Astronomer Jennifer Millard of Fifth Star Labs warned that future uncontrolled rocket stages could strike historic Apollo landing sites, scientific instruments or even crewed lunar habitats if proper disposal methods are not developed.

Dr. Matt Bothwell of the University of Cambridge said Earth's orbital environment is becoming increasingly crowded with discarded satellites and rocket hardware.

He noted that while the Moon impact itself was harmless, growing orbital congestion could eventually make access to space more difficult if debris continues to accumulate unchecked.

Previous Lunar Crashes Provide Valuable Data

The collision is far from the first object to strike the Moon.

NASA intentionally crashed Saturn V rocket stages into the lunar surface during the Apollo era to study seismic activity. In 2009, the agency deliberately impacted another rocket during the LCROSS mission to analyze water ice hidden inside permanently shadowed craters.

More recently, a Chinese rocket stage accidentally crashed into the Moon in 2022, while several attempted lunar landings—including India's Chandrayaan-2, Israel's Beresheet and Russia's Luna-25 missions—ended in crashes.

Scientists say each event provides valuable information about impact physics, lunar geology and the effects of collisions on the Moon's surface.

NASA and SpaceX Work Together on Artemis Program 

The latest incident comes as NASA and SpaceX continue working together on the Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon and establish a sustained human presence later this decade.

Researchers say future lunar bases, scientific equipment and transportation systems could become vulnerable if abandoned spacecraft continue entering unpredictable lunar orbits.

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell said this particular impact is unlikely to cause long-term problems but argued that future missions should avoid leaving rocket stages in unstable trajectories.

Scientists say improved planning for spacecraft disposal will become increasingly important as commercial and government missions to the Moon accelerate.
