SpaceX Stock Drops Below $135 IPO Price For The First Time

spacex stock drop

It was the most anticipated stock market debut of the decade — the IPO that minted the world's first trillionaire and briefly valued Elon Musk's space and artificial intelligence empire above Amazon and Microsoft combined. Now, barely a month after SpaceX's historic Nasdaq listing, the stock has slipped below its opening price, and the investors who bought in at or near the peak are watching the distance between their entry point and the current price grow uncomfortably wide.

SpaceX shares fell to $132.62 on Wednesday — breaching the $135 initial listing price from the company's June IPO and marking a decline of more than 2% in a single session, even as the broader Nasdaq index dropped a comparatively modest 0.2%. Measured against the stock's all-time intraday high reached in the frenzy of its market debut, the price is now down 41% — a retreat that has transformed the most celebrated IPO of the modern era into one of its more watched cautionary tales about the distance between debut enthusiasm and durable valuation.

From Trillionaire to Turbulence: The Anatomy of a Slide

SpaceX's post-IPO trajectory follows a pattern that market historians will recognize even if the company that produced it is unlike any other. The initial surge was extraordinary: investors who had spent years locked out of SpaceX's private market valuation rushed in the moment shares became available, treating the listing as their first real opportunity to buy into what they perceived as a pure-play AI company wrapped in rocket fuel and satellite ambition.

The enthusiasm was not irrational on its face. Earlier this year, SpaceX acquired Musk's AI startup xAI — recently rebranded SpaceXAI — marking the company's formal entry into the artificial intelligence business beyond its core rocket and satellite operations. Through that acquisition, SpaceX now leases data center capacity to other technology companies, a revenue stream that analysts initially treated as a significant expansion of the company's addressable market. XAI is best known publicly for the controversial chatbot Grok, but its data center business represents the infrastructural layer of the AI economy that investors have been willing to pay extraordinary premiums for across the sector.

The investor thesis was clear: SpaceX was not merely a rocket company. It was the first chance to own a piece of an AI infrastructure business at the ground floor of the public markets.

What Happened to the Thesis

The thesis has not been invalidated so much as it has been placed on hold — and in equity markets, waiting costs money. There has been no single catastrophic event, no earnings disaster, no regulatory blow that explains the slide. What there has been is a gradual evaporation of the catalysts that drove the initial frenzy, combined with a series of smaller negative signals that, cumulatively, have eroded confidence.

The sharpest single-session blow came when Starlink — SpaceX's telecommunications satellite subsidiary and one of its primary revenue engines — announced price cuts in the Memphis, Tennessee, area amid local controversy over a large data center project. Investors read the price reduction as a signal of competitive pressure or strategic compromise, and SpaceX shares fell 8% in a single day.

"There hasn't been anything lately to remind people of some of the catalysts for why they bought SpaceX," said Steve Sosnick, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers, speaking to Reuters. The absence of positive news in the weeks following a blockbuster IPO, Sosnick suggested, is itself a kind of pressure — one that tests the patience of investors who paid peak prices for a story that has not yet produced a public financial report.

The Earnings Report That Could Change Everything

SpaceX is expected to release its first public earnings report in August — a disclosure that will, for the first time, give market participants a detailed look at the financial architecture underlying a company that was previously shielded from public scrutiny by its private status. That report will either validate the valuation assumptions that drove the IPO price or complicate them in ways that could accelerate the current slide or reverse it entirely.

The anticipation of that report is one reason analysts have urged investors not to overinterpret the current price action. A stock trading a few dollars below its IPO price after a month of volatile public markets is, by historical standards, not unusual — and for a company of SpaceX's complexity and ambition, the absence of quarterly earnings data leaves a significant information vacuum that markets tend to fill with speculation and sentiment rather than fundamentals.

"The fact that a stock has fallen a couple of dollars below its IPO price in itself is not a tragedy," Sosnick said, "but SpaceX is heavily watched and has an important role in investor psyche."

The Broader Context: Tech Under Pressure

SpaceX's slide has not occurred in a vacuum. Tech stocks broadly have experienced turbulence in recent weeks, with a constellation of factors — interest rate uncertainty, geopolitical instability, and shifting AI sentiment — weighing on valuations across the sector. But SpaceX's decline has been steeper than the index that lists it: a 2%-plus drop on a day the Nasdaq fell 0.2% signals company-specific pressure beyond general market headwinds.

The company's core business — manufacturing and launching rockets and deploying Starlink satellites — remains operationally robust by most available measures. Starlink continues to expand its global subscriber base, SpaceX's Falcon 9 remains the world's most frequently flown orbital rocket, and the Starship program continues to advance toward the heavy-lift capabilities that both NASA and the commercial space sector depend on.

None of that has arrested the stock's drift. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

What Comes Next

The August earnings report represents the most significant near-term inflection point for SpaceX's share price. If it reveals the revenue scale and profitability trajectory that the IPO valuation implied, the stock may recover its footing. If it raises questions about the pace of AI integration, Starlink pricing pressure, or the cost structure of the rocket business, the slide could deepen.

For the investors who bought SpaceX shares at or near the IPO price in June — attracted by the history-making debut, the trillionaire narrative, and the promise of owning a piece of the most ambitious technology company on Earth — Wednesday's close below $135 is a number that demands patience, or explanation, or both.

The rocket company that conquered the public markets in June is now navigating a different kind of gravity. And unlike the ones its engineers have spent decades mastering, this one pulls in only one direction until something changes the math.
