Swisscom views this merger as a significant opportunity to strengthen its position in Italy’s competitive telecom landscape, with Fastweb already playing a key role in providing broadband services.

Regulatory Approvals and Next Steps

While the European Commission’s clearance is a major hurdle cleared, the transaction still requires approval from Italy’s competition authority, which initiated a phase two investigation into the deal in September. Swisscom also received approval from the Italian Cabinet and the Swiss competition commission. The company expects the acquisition to be completed by March 2025.

“This approval is another important step on the way to securing the regulatory approvals needed to finalize the transaction,” Swisscom said in a statement.
