Taylor Farms lettuce sample produced false positive for cyclospora

Taylor Farms cyclospora test

In a stunning reversal that whiplashed an already tense outbreak investigation, the US Food and Drug Administration announced Sunday that a lettuce sample from Taylor Farms initially flagged for cyclospora contamination should actually be considered a false positive — a correction that landed like a plot twist nobody saw coming.

Laboratory experts re-examined the results tied to the ongoing cyclospora parasite investigation and concluded the original finding simply didn't hold up under closer scrutiny, the FDA said.

From Confirmed Contamination To Clean Slate

As of Sunday, the FDA stated there are no confirmed positive sample results for cyclospora at all — a dramatic about-face from just a day earlier, when the agency had announced Saturday that a sample of shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms had tested positive for the parasite responsible for sickening thousands across the country.

Taylor Farms Pushes Back On The Original Finding

A spokesperson for Taylor Fresh Foods told Reuters the company had been informed directly that the FDA's initial test result was simply mistaken — not a footnote, but an outright error at the source.

"To be clear, at this moment, FDA has not identified a single positive product test result for cyclospora," the company stated flatly, effectively drawing a line under the confusion. Taylor Fresh Foods emphasized that it had still gone ahead with a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, choosing caution over complacency based on the information it had at the time.

FDA Continues Monitoring Despite The Reversal

Even with the false positive now on record, the FDA isn't backing away from its oversight role. The agency said in its latest update that it has "notified Taylor Farms and continues working with the firm to ensure the product implicated in this outbreak has been removed from the market" — a sign that vigilance hasn't relaxed just because one data point flipped.

Taylor Farms also said the FDA extended an apology over the error, having earlier confirmed that the product in question wasn't actually part of the company's current recall, according to the agency.

The Outbreak Behind The Confusion

While this particular test result unraveled, the broader outbreak investigation marches on. Cyclosporiasis linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Yum Brands' Taco Bell restaurants across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia has resulted in roughly 100 hospitalizations so far, with no deaths reported, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A Parasite That Thrives In Warm Weather

Cyclosporiasis stems from cyclospora, a single-cell protozoan that spreads primarily through water or food contaminated with feces. Like an unwelcome seasonal visitor, the parasite tends to surge during warmer months, typically between May and August, when conditions favor its spread.

Why Tracking This Outbreak Is So Difficult

Part of what makes cyclosporiasis such a slippery adversary for investigators is its slow-burn timeline. Symptoms can take days or even weeks to appear after infection, and once they do, diagnosis and official reporting can add several more weeks on top of that — a delay that turns outbreak tracing into something closer to reconstructing a crime scene long after the evidence has gone cold.

As the Taylor Farms cyclospora test saga settles into its corrected version of events, the broader investigation into the outbreak's true source continues, even as this particular chapter closes with an apology rather than a confirmed contamination.
