Three killed, Five injured after car plows into pedestrians in East Oakland

Vehicle strikes cars and pedestrians in Oakland

It started out as an accident involving two cars on a busy intersection in East Oakland. In a matter of seconds, however, it turned into a massacre on the sidewalks. Three pedestrians died, while a number more sustained serious injuries in what police describe as a horrific chain reaction of events in a heavily populated street of Oakland. The incident happened at about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday night, when a black SUV sped through a sidewalk and ran over a group of people gathered outside a neighborhood bar — a series of events that occurred in a matter of moments in one of the busiest streets in Oakland.
The accident took place near the intersection of International Boulevard and 85th Avenue, which is known to be one of the most highly frequented streets in East Oakland.

How It Happened: A Collision That Became a Catastrophe

According to eyewitness Cornelius Reed, who was present at the scene, the chain of events began with an initial collision between a blue vehicle and a black SUV directly outside the East Bay Market Liquor Store. What should have been a traffic incident — a fender-bender, perhaps, or a disputed right-of-way — instead became the trigger for something far worse.

The driver of the black SUV, rather than stopping, accelerated. The vehicle jumped the curb, mounted the sidewalk, and drove directly into the group of pedestrians gathered there — striking multiple people before crashing into yet another vehicle. The SUV cut through the crowd like a wrecking ball through glass, leaving bodies and wreckage in its wake.

Reed, visibly shaken as he recounted what he had witnessed, said he ran toward the victims immediately — only to find a scene that defied his ability to help.

"I ran over there, but I couldn't do nothing for nobody," Reed said. "I mean legs, legs bent opposite directions, arms going every which way. It was ugly. It was an ugly scene."

"Friends I've Known My Entire Life"

What transforms this crash from a statistic into a human tragedy is a detail Reed shared that no police report can fully capture: several of the victims lying on the sidewalk were people he had known his entire life. Neighbors. Friends. People whose faces were as familiar to him as the street corner itself.

The image of a man running toward people he loves, arriving too late and too helpless to change what had already happened, is one that will linger long after the investigation concludes and the police tape comes down.

Some of the injured survivors were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. The full extent of injuries among the surviving victims had not been officially characterized as of early Sunday morning.

Driver Flees on Foot — Caught by Bystanders

In the immediate aftermath of the carnage, the driver of the SUV exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot — an instinct for escape that was met by something rarer in modern urban life: collective intervention. Good Samaritans at the scene pursued and physically detained the driver before Oakland Police Department officers arrived to take him into custody.

The identity of the suspect has not been officially released. Oakland police, who maintained a presence at the scene throughout the overnight hours, had not issued a formal statement on the suspect or on charges as of early Sunday. KTVU, which was first to report the incident, said it was awaiting comment from the Oakland Police Department.

Three Dead, a Community in Shock

The deaths of three people on a sidewalk in East Oakland on a Saturday night represent more than a traffic fatality statistic. They represent a neighborhood's sudden, violent rupture — the kind that leaves residents asking questions that investigations rarely fully answer: Why did the driver accelerate? Was it road rage? Was it intentional? What turned a fender-bender into a death scene?

Those questions now belong to the Oakland Police Department, whose investigators worked through the night at the intersection of International Boulevard and 85th Avenue — a corner that, by Sunday morning, had become something it was not the night before: a place where three people drew their last breath on a sidewalk, and where the people who loved them could do nothing but watch.
