 While he will remain in office until a new leader for the country's Liberal Party is chosen, this marks the conclusion of an era for Trudeau, who has led the Liberal Party for 11 years.

The decision comes amid shockingly low poll numbers for the Liberal party. and increasing civil unrest in Canada. Trudeau’s resignation sets the stage for the Liberal Party to find a new leader capable of competing in the upcoming general election.

Mounting Pressures and the Trump Factor

Trudeau’s decision to step down comes as his party faces mounting pressure before an election many predict they will lose. His leadership has faced increasing criticism, particularly in light of his complicated relationship with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump’s election in the United States triggered calls for Canada to accelerate its own election timeline, with some demanding a stable government be put in place quickly to handle anticipated challenges with the Trump administration.

In an attempt to mitigate tensions, Trudeau traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida, in November for a meeting with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The meeting came after Trump pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico.

Trump has not held back from mocking Trudeau, referring to him as the “governor” of Canada and even joking about Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state.

Trudeau Steps Down Monday

"Every morning I've woken up as prime minister, I've been inspired by the resilience, generosity, and determination of Canadians," Trudeau said during a news conference. "It is the driving force of every single day I have the privilege of serving this office."

His announcement preceded an emergency meeting of Liberal legislators scheduled for Wednesday. Trudeau also declared that parliament would be suspended until March 24 to allow time for the leadership transition.

"This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election," Trudeau admitted.

Liberal Party Faces Internal Collapse

When Trudeau assumed leadership of the Liberal Party in 2013, it was struggling, having been reduced to third place in the House of Commons. He revitalized the party in 2015 with promises of "sunny ways" and a progressive agenda focused on women’s rights and climate change.
