It also supplies approximately 40% of the nation’s seafood, as reported by the Environmental Defense Fund.
Political Reactions
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis acknowledged the change in a post-inauguration press conference. While discussing a winter weather system, he referred to “an area of low pressure moving across the Gulf of America.”
In contrast, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected the renaming initiative, declaring at a press conference, “For us and the whole world, it is still the Gulf of Mexico.”
She noted that Mexico would continue to assert its cultural and territorial ties to the Gulf in diplomatic discussions and global forums.
“For Mexico and the entire world, the name remains the same,” Sheinbaum remarked, appearing more amused than concerned by the development.
While the name change has drawn strong reactions from both sides, the Gulf of Mexico remains a critical region for international cooperation and trade.
Mexico has indicated it will not recognize the renaming and will advocate for the established name in global discussions.
