Robert Mueller is the special counsel for the Justice Department in the Russia probe. He has filed new charges against the chairman of President Trump’s campaign. Prosecutors are claiming that Paul Manafort has ties to Russian intelligence.
Mueller charged Manafort and Konstantin Kilimnik on Friday. This comes only a few days after he accused these men of interfering with witnesses. However, Manafort was already awaiting trial on charges related to the foreign lobbying work he did.
Mueller’s investigation is seeking to prove whether or not the Russian government helped Donald Trump win the 2016 election. Because he has so many worldwide contacts, the investigation has a lot to prove. Trump also has his own ample resources. And his employees might have acted without his consent. All of these issues muddy the waters.
Manafort in Danger?
These new charges only put Manafort in more legal danger if he wants to have an aggressive battle with prosecutors. Mueller will seek to secure testimony that proves Manafort to be guilty.
