Civil Cases: The Financial Blow

Federal and state cases aside, Trump’s civil liabilities are immense. In the past 18 months alone, he’s faced judgments totaling over half a billion dollars. From New York Attorney General Letitia James’s fraud verdict—where president Trump was found to have inflated his net worth to gain favorable loan terms—to the defamation judgments awarded to E. Jean Carroll, Trump’s financial standing is deeply intertwined with these cases.

Unlike criminal cases, however, civil suits don’t fall under the same immunity protections. During his first term, Trump paid $2 million in a civil settlement over Trump Foundation funds, demonstrating that civil penalties can still reach a sitting president. But with Trump’s new legal team poised to argue that these suits could impair his ability to govern, we could see these cases go away entirely.
