Tupac Shakur Murder Trial: Did “Keffe D” Kill the Rapper in 1996

Tupac Murder

In September 2023, prosecutors in Clark County, Nevada indicted Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis for the murder of Tupac Shakur, who was killed in a 1996 drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.

Nearly three decades later, the case that shocked the music industry is finally heading to trial, with Davis accused of orchestrating the attack that ended the life of one of hip-hop’s most influential artists.

The Indictment Against Keffe D

Prosecutors allege that Davis, a leader of the South Side Crips street gang in Compton, California, ordered the hit on Shakur. Gang warfare resulted in a violent confrontation outside a Las Vegas boxing match.

Although Davis did not pull the trigger, officials say he facilitated the ambush by providing direction to his associates.

They cite Davis’ own words in interviews and in his memoir, where he described details of the shooting. Davis now claims those accounts were “entertainment” rather than confessions. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial, which is scheduled for February 2026.

“This case represents decades of frustration for the families of Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace,” one investigator told USA TODAY, referring to the unsolved murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G.

The Las Vegas Confrontation

On the night of September 7, 1996, tensions erupted when Shakur and associates from Death Row Records, including Marion “Suge” Knight, assaulted a member of the Crips inside the MGM Grand.

Hours later, Shakur and Knight were ambushed while riding in a BMW near the Las Vegas Strip.

Shakur was struck multiple times and died six days later. Knight was grazed in the head but survived.

Allegations of a $1 Million Bounty

According to a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) report, Davis said there was more at play than gang rivalry. He alleged that music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs offered him $1 million to kill Shakur and Knight.

Davis’ lawyers recently highlighted this claim in court filings, but Combs has repeatedly denied involvement. A spokesperson for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police confirmed to USA TODAY that Combs has never been considered a suspect.

“This allegation has circulated for years, but it’s never been substantiated with evidence,” said Greg Kading, a retired LAPD detective who investigated both murders.

The Ripple Effect: Biggie’s Murder

Six months after Shakur’s death, rival rapper Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace was gunned down in Los Angeles. Investigators have long speculated that his killing was connected to Shakur’s murder, but no one has ever been charged.

Kading wrote in his book that he believed Suge Knight orchestrated Wallace’s killing in retaliation. Knight, however, has denied this.

Music Industry Fallout

The deaths of Shakur and Wallace symbolized the peak of the East Coast–West Coast hip-hop feud of the 1990s. Shakur was signed to Death Row Records, aligned with the Bloods, while Wallace was under Bad Boy Records, run by Combs and allegedly linked to the Crips.

Death Row collapsed into bankruptcy in 2006 but was revived in 2022 when Snoop Dogg acquired its catalog. Bad Boy, meanwhile, became part of Combs’ multi-industry empire, though his net worth has reportedly declined in recent years amid legal battles.

Awaiting Justice After Decades

Davis remains the only surviving member of the Cadillac said to have carried out the shooting. His upcoming trial has reignited public interest in the long-unsolved case.

“The extradition of Davis and the charges against him reflect our ongoing pursuit of justice,” prosecutors said. “Tupac Shakur’s legacy deserves no less.”

As the hip-hop world continues to grapple with its history of violence, many fans hope the trial will finally provide clarity to one of music’s greatest mysteries.
