GARDEN GROVE, CALIFORNIA — I need you to stop what you are doing and read every word of this.

Not because it is dramatic. Not because it makes for a compelling headline. Because the people whose job it is to protect you — the firefighters, the doctors, the scientists, the government officials who declared a state of emergency — are telling you, with one unified voice, that what is happening right now at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove is not something you can ride out from your living room.

This is not a tornado warning where the odds favor the people who stay behind. This is not a precautionary notice that the authorities issue to cover themselves while expecting nothing to actually happen. This situation is different. Fundamentally, irreversibly different. And if you are still inside the evacuation zone, you need to leave right now.

A 34,000-gallon tank of methyl methacrylate — a highly volatile, flammable chemical — has been heating up since Thursday. Its internal safety valve is sealed shut by the very chemical it was designed to control. Professional hazmat crews have exhausted their options for stopping it from the outside. Orange County Fire Authority Chief Craig Covey, a man with 32 years of fire service experience, has publicly said this is the worst situation he has ever faced. Two outcomes remain on the table: a catastrophic toxic spill of thousands of gallons of dangerous chemicals flooding the surrounding area, or an explosion that sends debris, fire, and a toxic chemical cloud across an entire community.

Those are not two scenarios being offered to create alarm. Those are the two scenarios that experts, scientists, and emergency officials have placed before the public as the honest truth.

Now I am placing it before you.

If you are in that zone and you are thinking about staying because you have stayed through warnings before and nothing happened — I understand that instinct. I genuinely do. But I am asking you to set it aside right now, because this moment is not like those moments. The chemical inside that tank generates its own heat. The reaction does not stop because someone asks it to. And the faster the temperature climbs, the faster it climbs after that. There is no cavalry coming in time to fix this before it fails.

Please — take your children and leave. Do not tell yourself they will be fine for a few more hours. Do not wait until morning. Children's lungs are more vulnerable to chemical vapor than adults. A toxic plume does not announce itself. It does not give you time to gather belongings and load the car. It arrives, and then it is already inside your home.

Take your pets. They cannot ask you to protect them, so I am asking on their behalf.

Take your medications, your documents, and your phone — and go. Everything else is replaceable. Your family is not.
