US consulate shooting in Toronto

Authorities in Canada are investigating the US consulate shooting in Toronto after gunfire struck the diplomatic building early Monday morning in what officials are calling a potential national security incident.

The pre-dawn shooting rattled one of the city’s busiest districts, leaving behind shattered glass, shell casings and a wave of concern — but fortunately no injuries.

Gunfire Erupts Outside Diplomatic Building

The incident unfolded around 4:30 a.m. on March 10 outside the United States Consulate General Toronto, according to officials.

Police were alerted roughly an hour later when an officer was flagged down and directed to the scene.

When investigators arrived, they discovered evidence that shots had been fired at the building, including shell casings and visible damage to the structure’s exterior.

Deputy Chief Frank Barredo of the Toronto Police Service said the building’s reinforced design likely prevented casualties.

There were people inside at the time,” Barredo said during a news conference, noting the consulate’s highly secured, highly fortified” construction.

The damage was limited primarily to glass panels and a door.

Witness Describes Suspects and Getaway Vehicle

According to a witness account shared by police, a white Honda CR-V pulled up near the consulate shortly before the shots were fired.

Two males reportedly exited the vehicle, fired a handgun at the building, then quickly returned to the SUV and fled the scene.

The vehicle was later seen heading southbound on University Avenue, investigators said.

Authorities have asked the public to come forward with dash-camera footage or any information that could help identify the suspects.

Police also released an image of the vehicle believed to be involved.

Authorities Label Incident a Security Threat

Officials from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed the case is being treated as a national security incident.

Chief Superintendent Chris Leather said investigators are working closely with both Canadian and U.S. authorities.

The RCMP is coordinating with the FBI as well as the consulate itself as the investigation unfolds.

Despite the seriousness of the attack, officials emphasized there is no immediate indication of a threat to the broader public.

Leaders Condemn the Attack

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly denounced the shooting, calling it a disturbing attempt to intimidate.

The shots fired toward the United States Consulate in Toronto early this morning are a reprehensible act of violence and attempt at intimidation,” Carney said, adding he was relieved no one was hurt.

He also said the Canadian government has recently reviewed changes to the threat landscape in the country and stressed the importance of remaining vigilant to protect domestic security.

Heightened Security Around Consulates

Authorities said security will be strengthened around diplomatic buildings in the area, including both the U.S. consulate and the Israeli Consulate in Toronto.

These consulates deserve a heightened amount of vigilance and security at this time,” Leather said.

Investigators are also exploring whether the incident might be linked to recent shootings targeting synagogues in Toronto, though officials cautioned that no confirmed connection has been established.

Officials Call Violence “Unacceptable”

Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, condemned the shooting in a statement posted to social media.

Canada will never tolerate intimidation and violence of any kind, including toward our American friends in Canada,” he said.

The U.S. Department of State confirmed it is aware of the incident and is monitoring developments in coordination with local law enforcement.

Investigation Continues

The US consulate shooting in Toronto remains under active investigation as police search for the suspects responsible.

Authorities have not yet released descriptions of the two individuals believed to be involved.

For now, the shattered glass and bullet scars left on the consulate’s exterior serve as a stark reminder of the fragile balance between diplomacy and security — and the determination of investigators to uncover who fired the shots in the quiet hours before dawn.
