A 23-year-old Florida International University student is now facing serious felony charges after messages she posted in a group chat were interpreted as a bomb threat tied to a campus event. What she later called a “dumb joke” has turned into a high-stakes criminal case, raising questions about intent, safety, and how quickly online words can spiral into real-world consequences.

Who Is Gabriela Saldana and What Happened

Gabriela Saldana, a student at Florida International University, allegedly made "a threat to kill or do bodily harm to individuals regarding a scheduled event on Friday, April 10, 2026, via a WhatsApp group chat," according to an arrest report cited by nbcmiami.com.

Authorities say the message was sent Wednesday in a group chat involving multiple people, with the incident location listed as FIU’s campus.

She was arrested on April 16 near a parking garage on the Modesto Maidique campus, according to JFEED.

The Message That Triggered Alarm

At the center of the investigation is a message sent to a 215-member WhatsApp group for capstone students.

“Netanyahu, if you can hear me, drop some bonbons for us Capstone students in Ocean Bank Convocation Center.”

Investigators say the term “bonbons” was interpreted as a coded reference to bombs.

Saldana allegedly followed with another message claiming “there is going to be a bomb in the Ocean Bank Convocation Center and it was going to be Jonathan’s fault,” referring to another student in the chat.

Police Response and Arrest

FIU police launched an investigation after multiple students reported the messages, treating them as a potential threat to a scheduled event at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.

"The defendant did so in a manner in which it may be viewed by another person and intended the threat to be a true threat," the report stated.

Authorities later located and arrested Saldana at an address corresponding to a parking garage on 8th Street and 109th Avenue.

She admitted to sending the messages and was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

From “Joke” to Felony Charge

Saldana later described the posts as a “dumb joke,” saying they were meant to express frustration and possibly push for the event to be rescheduled.

She even edited the message afterward, adding an apologetic “I sowwy :(”.

But investigators and prosecutors were not persuaded.

She now faces a second-degree felony charge of making written threats to kill or do bodily harm, a charge that carries serious legal consequences.

Court Ruling and Bail Decision

In bond court, Judge Mindy S. Glazer set bail at $5,000.

Despite defense arguments that the messages were not meant to be taken seriously, the judge ruled they constituted a credible threat.
