Kaan Ayhan's goal came in the 90th minute, plus eight. Turkey won 3-2. But the United States still finished first in Group D.

A Lead Twice. Twice Undone.

Auston Trusty scored in the third minute, a center back opening the scoring in a World Cup group game on home soil.

It did not hold. Arda Güler, the Real Madrid prospect who has a habit of showing up in big moments, equalized in the 10th. Barış Alper Yılmaz put Turkey ahead before halftime. Turkey had to win regardless of what happened elsewhere in the group. They were fighting for their tournament life, and they played like it.

Sebastian Berhalter pulled it back to 2-2 four minutes into the second half. The game was frantic: every goal answered quickly, both teams running counterattacks in waves. With the score level, the U.S. was already through. There was still almost an hour of football to go.

Then Kaan Ayhan, a center back, headed in what would be one of the last plays of the match. That is the kind of thing that always happens in soccer.

The Numbers Do Not Lie

Six points from three matches. A 4-1 win over Paraguay to open. A 2-0 shutout against Australia with Pulisic in the stands and the team still working. Then this loss, against a Turkey side that needed the result more than the U.S. did.

Six points is the best group stage the USMNT has ever had. Historically, this team came to World Cups to survive the group stage. That has changed. The U.S. advances as group winners, and the level of soccer under Pochettino is hard to argue with. This has become a team that actually plays good football.

First place matters. The path out of Group D is different from what a second-place finish would have meant. There is strategy in making sure you earn the better side of the bracket going into the knockout round.

Pulisic Is Back

Pochettino managed him carefully the whole tournament. He did not risk him against Australia when the calf injury was too recent. He brought him on against Turkey when the result no longer affected the U.S. standing, but gave him real minutes to keep his rhythm going ahead of what comes next.

Pulisic came on in the second half and played 33 minutes. Three shots. Twelve accurate passes. He was the most dangerous player on the field during that stretch, which says a lot considering the circumstances.

That is the most important thing that happened in this game. Not the final score. The star player is recovering well, and the team continues to build something that works even without him.

Without Pulisic, the system holds. With Pulisic, the system has another level.

What Bosnia Brings

Wednesday, July 1. Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. 8 p.m. Eastern. This is the knockout round. No more room for draws, no more safety nets. All in.

Bosnia and Herzegovina advanced as third-place finishers in Group A with four points. That does not mean they got lucky. They are a physical, organized side that knows how to make a game ugly when it suits them. They will try to take away time and space, make it a grinding, exhausting match and wait for the U.S. to make a mistake.

The thing is, Pochettino's team has already shown it can handle that kind of game. The 2-0 win over Australia was not played in open space either.

The key is going to be high pressure in the first half. That has been Pochettino's formula, and if the U.S. can press Bosnia into mistakes early, this should be their match.

What Is Being Built

A home World Cup feels different. The pressure is real, the expectations are higher. Levi's Stadium on July 1 is going to be loud. Everyone wants to see this round.

The group stage was the warmup. Six points across three matches is a strong foundation. But Bosnia is the first real test, and the USMNT goes into it as group winners, with their captain back, and with the knowledge that even when things went wrong, this team held together.

What is being built here makes sense: a team.
