A man accused of opening fire on Secret Service agents near the Washington Monument has been formally charged, according to federal authorities, following a chaotic incident that unfolded earlier this week in the nation’s capital.

The suspect, identified as Michael Marx, faces multiple federal charges. The charges include assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm during a violent crime, and unlawful possession of a firearm due to a prior conviction.

Incident Near Vice Presidential Motorcade

According to a sworn affidavit from a United States Secret Service agent, Marx was observed walking along a path near the Washington Monument as the motorcade of Vice President JD Vance passed through the area.

Authorities say the situation escalated quickly. When agents approached Marx, he allegedly fled before turning and firing in the direction of law enforcement officers. The vice president’s motorcade was reportedly diverted out of caution while security teams assessed the unfolding threat.

Injured Bystander, Secret Service Wound Suspect

During the exchange, a juvenile bystander was injured, according to statements from Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn. Details about the extent of the injuries have not been fully disclosed.

Secret Service agents returned fire, striking Marx multiple times. The affidavit states he was hit in the hand, left arm, and upper abdomen. After being subdued, agents attempted to render medical aid.

However, the situation remained volatile. Authorities allege that Marx spat at officers while on the ground and made hostile remarks during transport to a hospital.

Secret Service Statements and Evidence

Investigators recovered a Texas driver’s license from the suspect, though additional background details have not yet been released publicly. During transport, Marx allegedly made statements expressing hostility toward the White House, though officials have not clarified the broader context of those remarks.

For more information about federal law enforcement procedures, visit U.S. Secret Service or review federal court processes at U.S. Courts.

Secret Service Announce No Direct Threat to President

Officials emphasized that Donald Trump was not in danger during the incident and that there is no confirmed connection between the suspect and the White House.

The event, however, comes amid heightened concerns about security in Washington, D.C., particularly following a separate recent case involving an alleged assassination attempt tied to a major political event.

Growing Security Concerns

The shooting highlights ongoing challenges faced by federal protective services in securing high-profile public spaces. The area surrounding the Washington Monument is frequently visited by tourists and often intersects with official motorcade routes, making rapid response essential.

Authorities have not yet announced a court date for Marx’s next appearance, and it remains unclear whether he has obtained legal representation.
