Wolf Recovery and Wildlife Management: Mexican Gray Wolf Expands Its Territory

Mexican gray wolf

The Mexican gray wolf is an endangered subspecies of the gray wolf native to North America. And one particular wolf has defied the boundaries set for managing these rare creatures.

Federal biologists have recently confirmed that a Mexican gray wolf, known as F2754, has ventured beyond the designated Mexican gray wolf recovery area for the second time. The wolf has been located west of Jemez Springs, New Mexico.

Mexican Gray Wolf

This remarkable journey of the Mexican gray wolf has led to discussions among federal and state wildlife managers, as they ponder whether to capture and relocate the wolf once again.

F2754 has managed to travel north of Interstate 40, surpassing the recovery zone that spans parts of southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. The wolf was last tracked to a mountainous area west of Jemez Springs after crossing the interstate west of Albuquerque.

This isn't the first time F2754 has ventured beyond its established territory. In the past, it reached the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Taos, New Mexico, before being captured and released back into the wild in Arizona. The wolf's persistence in exploring new territories has garnered attention from both conservationists and local ranchers.

Environmentalists view this journey as a testament to the natural inclination of wolves to roam and thrive outside of designated boundaries. It challenges the notion that Mexican gray wolves can only exist within certain, often arbitrary, areas in New Mexico and Arizona.

Legal challenges are currently pending in federal court, focusing on the rules governing wolf recovery. One critical issue of the federal regulation mandating the removal of all Mexican wolves north of Interstate 40, even in cases where the wolves cause no harm.

Defenders of Wildlife

Environmental groups have argued that this provision ignores scientific evidence and may hinder the subspecies' recovery efforts.

Bryan Bird, the Southwest program director of the environmental group Defenders of Wildlife, believes that F2754's journey may be driven by the wolf's search for a mate, suggesting that it might find one in Colorado.

He points out that this event serves as a clear indication that wolves could once again roam from the northern Rockies in Canada to the Sierra of Mexico if given the opportunity, promoting a more interconnected and robust wolf population.

However, not everyone is thrilled about the wolf's expansion into new territories. Ranchers in New Mexico and Arizona have long expressed concerns about wolves, attributing livestock deaths to their presence.

They worry about the potential consequences of further range expansion and urge caution among residents who may encounter Mexican gray wolves.

Positive population trends

Loren Patterson, president of the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association, stressed the need for vigilance, especially in rural areas, to protect vulnerable children, pets, and livestock.

Recent survey results released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicate a positive trend in the Mexican gray wolf population.

There were at least 241 Mexican wolves roaming the southwestern United States, marking the seventh consecutive year of population growth.

Federal wildlife managers also documented an increase in breeding pairs and pups during the last winter, marking a significant milestone in the two-decade-long reintroduction efforts.

The expansion of F2754's territory is a reminder of the ongoing challenges and opportunities in wolf recovery and wildlife management.
