Meanwhile, radar systems once used to image near-Earth asteroids—such as the 1968 radar observation of asteroid 1566 Icarus—may soon be employed to map this interstellar visitor. Scientists hope such imaging could help determine whether 3I/ATLAS is indeed natural or engineered.
For now, its blue appearance and rapid brightening remain some of the most puzzling astronomical phenomena of 2025.
