Poison Hemlock, Beautiful but deadly in bloom across the U.S.

Poison hemlock looks like a harmless flower, but it is deadly. This was the poison used in ancient Greece for executions. One of the most famous executions was of Socrates.

The Texas A&M AgiLife Extension Service advises that the stem and leaves are the most poisonous part of the plants.

Kinzie Kizer picked some of those deadly flowers near Dallas and, it almost killed her. She described her experience in a Facebook post.

"Shortly after pulling the weeds, my arms felt as if they were on fire. So, I took a shower to wash out what I believed to be splinters. Less than an hour later, my tongue started swelling, my skin burned, my speech slurred, and I was dizzy, confused, and very shaky."

"It started to feel as though my chest was tightening and I was struggling to breathe. I went to the ER where it was confirmed I had been poisoned by Poisonous Hemlock."

North American Invasion

Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), once limited to Europe and Western Asia, has stealthily infiltrated nearly every state in North America.

Unknowingly introduced in the 1800s as a decorative "winter fern," this hardy plant spread rapidly, wreaking havoc on humans and animals due to its highly poisonous nature.

Thriving in disturbed sites and shaded areas with moist soil, poison hemlock's presence is prominent along roadsides, field margins, ditches, marshes, meadows, riverbanks, and low-lying regions. However, its inconspicuous appearance can make it difficult to identify.

Identifying the plant can be challenging but recognizing its distinct features is important.

Poison hemlock possesses a musty, unpleasant odor associated with alkaloids. It grows to heights ranging from two to ten feet, displaying ribbed and hollow stems with purplish streaks or splotches.

The leaves of poison hemlock resemble ferns, arranged opposite each other in a compound pattern. These leaves consist of narrow segments, emitting a rank odor when crushed.

The small, white, or yellowish flowers boast five petals, blossoming above the ovary. Clustered in umbrella-shaped formations, the flowers are accompanied by four to six brown bracts beneath each cluster.

Symptoms and Lethality

Accidental consumption of even small portions of poison hemlock can lead to dire consequences.

Its lethal toxins, primarily concentrated in the seed, lower stem, and roots, can swiftly induce respiratory paralysis, coma, and death if left untreated beyond three hours of ingestion.

Recognizing the following symptoms is vital:

  1. Sweating
  2. Vomiting
  3. Dilated pupils
  4. Burning sensation on the skin
  5. Restlessness or confusion
  6. Muscle paralysis
  7. Seizures

Should you encounter poison hemlock and experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency room.

Poison Hemlock is deadly

Apart from its detrimental impact on human and animal health, poison hemlock poses significant threats to ecosystems and habitats.

Its aggressive growth diminishes the availability of quality forage for cattle and horses, contaminates haying operations, and degrades wildlife habitat. Additionally, the plant's presence reduces the diversity of flora and fauna species while decreasing land value.

Poison hemlock reproduces through seeds that fall near the parent plant, dispersing through fur, birds, water, and, to some extent, wind. While most seeds fall between September and December, some may persist until the end of February. Germination typically occurs in the fall, with flowering usually commencing in the second spring.

Notably, the fruit of poison hemlock exhibits a distinct egg-shaped outline with wavy ribs on its surface, comprising two dry halves, each containing a single seed, eventually separating from one another.
