Blue Origin, the aerospace manufacturer founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, encountered a setback in its plans to launch the New Shepard mission rocket on Monday. The mission, designated NS-24, was slated to be a significant milestone for Blue Origin.

 It would have marked its return to flight after a 15-month hiatus. The last launch was in September 2022, which unfortunately failed.

The company announced the mission scrub on X, citing ground issues as the primary reason for the delay. The launch window, scheduled to open at 10:30 am ET near Van Horn, Texas, was abandoned only 14 minutes after it commenced.

Initially, Blue Origin's space tourism program offered a brief orbit experience for wealthy individuals, costing more than $25 million. The journey traveling at the speed of sound past the Karman line, the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and outer space .

New Shepard Mission Details

This mission held special significance for Blue Origin as it aimed to carry 33 science and research payloads for various clients, including NASA and several US universities. 

There were also 38,000 postcards from students, a part of Blue Origin's educational non-profit initiative Club for the Future, on board. These postcards, once returned to Earth, will bear the stamp 'Flown to Space,' serving as unique souvenirs for the participating students.

Blue Origin emphasized that NS-24 had received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to proceed. The company expressed its commitment to reschedule the launch later in the week, with the launch window opening at 8:30 am local time.

A Series of Setbacks

The preceding mission, NS-23, faced a critical anomaly just over a minute after lift-off in September 2022. The New Shepard's capsule activated its escape system, separating from the booster when the engine malfunctioned. 

The FAA conducted a comprehensive year-long probe into the incident, attributing the failure to an engine nozzle issue caused by higher-than-expected operating temperatures.

The FAA's corrective actions mandated a series of improvements before Blue Origin could resume launches. The investigation revealed that the engine nozzle failure led to the New Shepard rocket falling back to the ground after liftoff.

Fortunately, the crew capsule's successful ejection and safe return to Earth indicated the effectiveness of the onboard safety systems.

Despite the setbacks, Blue Origin still has ambitions in the space sector.

Blue Origin 

Founded by Jeff Bezos, the space agency opened in 2000. 

The company, headquartered in Kent, Washington, initially focused on sub-orbital spaceflight services to develop cost-effective, reliable, and reusable launch vehicles.

It has sent 25 civilians to space in five sub-orbital missions as of June 2022. It is important to note that Blue Origin has not yet sent people into orbit around the Earth.

They have been contracted by NASA to develop, test and deploy its Blue Moon landing system for the agency’s Artemis V mission, which explores the Moon and prepares future manned missions to Mars.

Blue Origin currently boasts two launch vehicles, namely the suborbital New Shepard, named after Alan Shepard, the first American in space. And New Glenn, named after John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth. 

Plans have also been announced for a space vehicle named New Armstrong, honoring Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon.

As Blue Origin recalibrates its launch schedule for the New Shepard mission, the space community watches closely, recognizing the challenges inherent in pushing the boundaries of space exploration and commercialization.
